Congratulations to Gary
Phillips, our Distinguished Faculty for
2006-2007.

Our Second Eight Week session began October 16 and we
anticipate a nice increase in FTES as a result of
increasing the number of sections offered to 116, 54 of
which had closed by last Thursday. Our team in the
Counseling Department were at work calling waitlisted
students to encourage them to come to the first meeting
of the class, as it has been our experience that those
students will likely be accommodated. We executed a
tightly-targeted ad campaign at SDSU and through radio
traffic spots.

Tina Young, a recent addition to our Forensic Technology
Program was featured in the October issue of SAN DIEGO
MAGAZINE in an article titled, “CSI: San Diego…kinda.”
Tina and AOJ program director Dr. P. J. Ortmeier were
quoted.
Grossmont’s inclusion in SOC provides special
designation for the U.S. military and means that our
college will be listed with others who have earned a
quality reputation with regard to educational services
provided members of the armed forces. We will use the
SOC logo on promotional materials and advertising
focused on the military. Thanks to Brad Tiffany and
Peggy Shepard who are our campus’ contact persons for
this valuable program.
The current 29 students enrolled in the Office
Professional Training program this semester prepared a
potluck buffet dinner on October 17th for their mentors,
who are OPT graduates. For many students, Mentor Night
is a turning point in the semester. With the assistance
of those who have gone before them, they now realize
that success is possible!
Our GCCCD joint College Speech and Debate team recently
competed in the first tournament of the season. Students
received four first place awards. Congratulations to
coaches Roxanne Tuscany and Nancy Jennings, as well as
our rookie debaters who won two rounds out of four in
their debates!
Two Grossmont college students were recognized at the
Student Showcase Awards Ceremony in July at the San
Diego County Fair. The students painted the fair theme
mural “Ride the Tide to Fun” under the direction of our
Ceramics Laboratory Technician Alfred Ventura. The 8ft.
by 20ft. mural was completed in ten days! Katie Johnson
is enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program and Becky
Horton is a nursing student.

On October 13, Grossmont College was presented the
ASATT Region 6 Educational Award for 2006, for
"continued dedication in sponsoring, promoting and
furthering education, thus advancing professionalism
among anesthesia technicians and technologists."
Twenty CVT students participated in the
internationally recognized “Coronary Interventions”
conference hosted by Scripps Clinic, La Jolla. The
students were able to attend this important and
career-enhancing medical conference thanks to funding
from the CVT/Foundation account and a special agreement
with the Scripps Healthcare system. They experienced
case demonstrations that were broadcast live from
Scripps Green Hospital and New York’s Columbia
University. They met and heard lectures from
internationally known cardiologists, radiologists, and
scientists.
Mark you calendar for upcoming Grand Opening
events:
- January 17, 11:30 a.m. New Science
Laboratory Building
- February 2, 11 a.m. Digital Arts and
Sculpture Building Complex
Over the past ten days Grossmont College International
Admissions staff conducted, at the request of the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a validation
audit to measure Student and Exchange Visitor
Information System (SEVIS) data integrity. SEVIS is a
monitoring and tracking system for international
students studying in the United States and is critical
for national security. I am pleased to say that, in all
cases, Grossmont College SEVIS data were determined to
be comprehensive, accurate and in full compliance with
DHS standards.
Congratulations to the Grossmont College Admissions &
Records staff and in particular to Carol Compton, Mika
Miller and Laith Shammas, who worked diligently to
produce these excellent results.
As you may know, Grossmont College has over 650
international students enrolled in Fall 2006 classes,
which is more than twice any other SDICCCA College.
