Faculty and staff across the campus have been
contributing to our enrollment promotion efforts. This
year, student information tables were up and operating
one week earlier than in the past; students on wait
lists received calls when seats opened up. KUSI
broadcasted from the Grossmont College campus during
four “Good Morning San Diego” segments Monday, August
21.
As of Friday, August 11, Fall semester enrollment
figures showed that we had almost exactly the same
number of students and the same number of units
registered as last Fall at this point in the
registration process. We hope that we will be able to
turn this into a positive comparison as we add sections
in response to high student demand in courses with long
wait lists.
Our Summer enrollment data at this time continues to
report positive information, with an increase of
approximately 2.4% in FTES.

The
August 14th convocation provided a great focus for our
entire campus community and beginning for our 46th
academic year. Thanks to Trustee Weeks, Alexander, and
Garrett, as well as our student trustees for joining us. Faculty report that they enjoyed
the “Generation Me” presentation. Thanks to Alba Orr and
Jeff Lehman for organizing the barbeque, and to the
Grossmont College Foundation for their support in
helping us with our meal expenses.

New full-time faculty members began their
orientation and continued in sessions held
throughout the academic year. Our interim VP for
Academic Affairs, Dr. Don Low, and faculty
leadership jointly plan and conduct the
activities. We also included special orientation
sessions during this week and the first week of
the semester for part-time faculty, which are
coordinated by Pam Amor. The Professional
Development Week schedule includes a variety of
interesting sessions scheduled throughout the
week.

Through the Grossmont sponsored Welcome Back program,
twenty-seven new nurses were graduated from the
Grossmont College accelerated nursing program August 4
and are now eligible to sit for the state licensing
exam. Welcome Back participants are
internationally-trained health care workers who, through
their accelerated program, will be providing
critically-needed nursing skills in our local health
care institutions. Bob Yarris reported that selection
was underway for the third cohort of Welcome Back
participants, who began classes.

Thanks to the Counseling Department for helping parents
of first-time college students adjust to the challenges
of ‘adult’ children as students. Approximately 120
parents participated in this event.

Learning & Technology Resources Dean Kats Gustafson
reported the Fall 2006 Study Abroad in Florence is fully
subscribed with 50 students, and a waiting list of 22.
These students will all be enrolled in 12 units of study
while they enhance their learning through assimilating
various aspects of Italian culture. Good work, Kats, as
well as faculty members Marion de Koning and Janice
Bellinghiere who helped coordinate our planning and
promotion of the program.

The San Diego East Visitors Bureau celebrated its 9th
anniversary with an annual meeting celebration. For the
same number of years, this organization has provided an
annual scholarship for a Grossmont College student
enrolled in the Travel and Tourism Program. We
appreciate their support of our Foundation and our
students.
