Enrollment Update
|
We are asking for your assistance with regard to
enrollment. As you may be aware, our enrollment for
summer 2005 is down by eight percent compared to summer
2004. Enrollment breathes life into this institution,
and we need to maintain a level of FTES that is expected
to support our college’s allocation of revenue from the
state.
Please help us spread the word: a second summer session
begins July 11, and fall semester begins August 22.
Printed promotional materials are available and I would appreciate your assistance distributing
them to individual or group contacts you may have in the
community. Please contact Martha Garcia in our
Community/College Relations office via email,
martha.garcia @gcccd.edu to let her know how many
promotional flyers you will need; she will place them in
your mailbox.
These flyers coordinate with the advertising theme used
in our print advertisements which are appearing over the
next few weeks, began June 30, in the San Diego
Union-Tribune, and which are being mailed to recent high
school graduates in our service area. Another print
campaign will take place later in July and we will have
collateral flyers again available at that time.
Thank you for helping us spread the word about the great
opportunities for students here at Grossmont College. |

Spring Bonus Session
Nearly 350 students took advantage of our innovative
Spring Bonus Session, developed to help SDSU-bound
students complete their transfer requirements before
June 30. Again, I would like to thank Dr. Colli and the
Enrollment Strategies Committee for finding ways to help
students meet their goals. |
Groundbreaking Celebration for New Science Lab Building
It was a wonderful bright sunny day
for the Grossmont College campus! The groundbreaking
ceremony for the new Science Laboratory Building also
signals a bright new future for our biology and
chemistry departments. Thanks to Trustee Cutting, almost
everyone got to hold a ceremonial shovel and share in
the moment. We appreciate the work of the committee that
planned the building, and the committee that planned
such a nice event. We also appreciate the participation
of Board Members Alexander, Garrett and Weeks, and
student representative Peter Anderson.

Commencement Marked Completion of College's 44th
Year!
As the final student crossed the Quad to receive a
commencement scroll, Grossmont College completed its
44th academic year. The Main Quad was filled to the brim
with enthusiastic grads and their friends and families –
all of the 2,300 chairs were occupied. Everyone
certainly enjoyed hearing Dawn Monday’s story. She was
an exceptional student speaker and we thank Joel
Castellaw for coordinating that part of our complex
ceremony. Thanks also to our governing board members and
to the Chancellor for their participation.

Pat Murray Joins State
Classified Senate
Each year the California Community
College Classified Senate awards two $500 scholarships
to classified staff members who are active within their
local classified senates. This year, Pat Murray was
awarded one of the two scholarships to attend the
Classified Leadership Institute state conference in
June.
This Classified Leadership Institute conference focused
on the important role that classified staff plays in the
success of the community college; the positive aspects
of classified involvement in participatory (shared)
governance, and emphasized improving individual
leadership effectiveness. Technology workshops and other
activities which included both interactive and
information sessions were offered. Key Presenters
included Bob Harris, Vice chancellor of Student Services
at Lois Rios Community College District who spoke about
"Empowering Leaders", and Dr. James Kossler, Pasadena
City College president, who spoke about "Leading from
Within". Pat also co-presented a workshop outlining the
'Memorandum of Understanding' and 'Delineation of
Duties' agreements with local CSEA chapters and how
these documents can help senates work together more
effectively with 4CS associate/past president, Cari
Plyley .
Pat was also elected the State Board Executive Office
Representative for the Southeast Region. She will be
assisting area classified senates communicate with the
state executive board and assisting state executive
board committee projects including; website and
technology and 'Model Senate' awards.
Pat will be co-presenting with another state board
executive at this year's annual CCLC (Community Colleges
League of California) convention that will he held in
November, a workshop entitled "Empowered: The Actions
Behind the Word". The workshop will provide a forum for
exploring ways to live empowered and how "living
empowered" influences the ability to serve students and
our communities. Participants will engage in group
exercises and self-assessment to develop a Personal
Empowerment Plan.
