4th Annual Recognition Awards
Ceremony Held May 15 |
Established in 1999, the College Recognition Awards
Ceremony has evolved into a comprehensive event to
recognize career milestones and outstanding achievements
by faculty and staff. The College Recognition Committee
is now an established standing committee of the College.
On May 15, more than 60 individuals were presented to
their peers and received certificates acknowledging
their achievements. In addition, nearly 50 KUDOS
recipients received special recognition for their ‘above
and beyond’ contributions to the Grossmont College
community.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of three
awards to recipients not previously announced:

Members of the College Recognition Committee are: Dr.
Pamela Amor, Barbara Chernofsky, Susan Herney, Howard
Kummerman, Susan Lipsmeyer, Pat Murray, Edda
Temoche-Weldele, and Evan Wirig. Dr. Martinez serves as
the Committee Chair.
The event was made possible by the generosity of the
Grossmont College Foundation which provided the ‘pipe
and drape’ coverings that turn the Student Center into
an event venue; provided harpist Tasha Smith, and
flowers for the event, including table arrangements and
corsages and boutonničres.
Refreshments included beautifully decorated cakes
provided by the ROP Culinary Arts Baking & Pastry Making
Class, under the direction of Chef Joe Orate, and Aztec
Shops contributed beverages and paper products. |
Womens' Tennis Team Champs Again |
Congratulations to Coach Megan Lowrey and our tennis
team, who have won the state California Community
College championship for the eighth time in 14 years! It
wasn’t too long ago that Coach Lowrey was a player
herself on the school’s first state championship team in
1988. |
Jazz Ensemble Wins First Place |
Congratulations to the Music Department’s Jazz Ensemble
for their first place showing at the Coronado Jazz
Festival May 3rd. Paul Kurokawa, the ensemble director,
praised the young musicians for their skill and spirit. |

Transfer Achievement Celebrated |
|
Trustees Alexander and Cutting were on hand to help us
celebrate transfer for eighty Grossmont students and
their families on May 2nd. It is always energizing to
see our students celebrating their next step as they
transfer with majors from Audiology, Mechanical
Engineering, Music Performance and Microbiology. Thanks
to Transfer Center Coordinator, Bonnie Schmiege, for
orchestrating such a wonderful event for our students. |
Innovative Nursing Curriculum |
|
I am pleased to tell you that the California Board of
Registered Nursing has approved a new accelerated
curriculum designed by Dr. Elisabeth Hamel. The new
curriculum, which will be implemented later this year,
is specifically designed for international medical
graduates who are participating in the California
Endowment’s “Welcome Back” project, a program
coordinated by our Regional Health Occupations Resource
Center. Congratulations to Elisabeth and to RHORC
Director Bob Yarris for this accomplishment, which will
add yet another cohort of nurses to help fill our
region’s well-documented need for registered nurses.

Final Exams & Concluding
Ceremonies |
Final
exams begin next Tuesday, May 27th, which will lead up
to the 42nd annual Grossmont College Commencement
Ceremony June 4th in the Main Quad at 5:30 p.m. This
year we have more than 1,300 students who will receive a
degree or a certificate. Also participating in this
year’s commencement is the first cohort of our evening
and weekend nursing students.

CCPRO Conference & Awards |
Two ASGC officers, John Correia and Stephanie Duncan,
participated on a ‘students as consumers’ panel for
statewide community college public relations
practitioners held by the Community College Public
Relations Organization in San Diego. We thank them
for taking time from their own spring break activities.
During the same conference, four Grossmont College
entries received awards:
First place for feature writing for the Diane Leong
story; third place awards were presented for Campus
Scene (the other winners were all four color
newsletters) in the internal newsletter category; class
schedule; and brochure flyer for the 2002-2003 Theatre
Department brochure. |
Fine Arts Events |
The
final theatre production of the year, “Waiting for Godot”
by Samuel Beckett, will be playing at the Stagehouse
Theatre, with final performances Saturday at 2 p.m. and
8 p.m.
The Student Art Exhibit in the Hyde Gallery will close
Friday. If you have not already seen this excellent
exhibit of student work organized by Ben Aubert, make
time to stop by to view this juried show. Our
outstanding division student for Communications and Fine
Arts, Stacey Heuchert, has a large and engaging
sculpture in the show.
