Academic Senate Project Sends Thousands of
Protest Cards to Sacramento |
|
Thanks
to the leadership of Cathy Harvey and the Grossmont
College Academic Senate, faculty were invited into
classrooms March 10 to distribute post cards for
students to use in communicating their messages to
Sacramento for the statewide rally held there yesterday.
Four Grossmont faculty members, Zoe Close, Janice
Johnson, Michael Perez and Sylvia Montejano hand carried
more than 8,000 post cards to the Governor and our
region’s legislative delegation. Thanks to everyone who
participated in the planning and execution of this
project, which was truly a campus-wide collaborative
effort. |

Letters to the President |
Dear Dr. Martinez:
I have just completed the courses Geology 110 and
Geology Lab 111 during the fall semester, and wish to
express my appreciation for the opportunity to attend
such outstanding classes.
Professor Jacobson is one of the most enthusiastic
instructors I have had the privilege to encounter. Even
though Geology 110 and Geology 111 are two separate
classes, the manner in which Professor Jacobson
integrated the two courses both simplified and clarified
many concepts and explanations. It takes both talent and
dedication to accomplish such a feat.
The quality of your instructors and instruction at
Grossmont College continues to amaze me. The present
generation is truly lucky to encounter instructors such
as Professor Jacobson.
I am looking forward to my continuing association with
Grossmont College.

Dear Dr Martinez:
In 1980 at age 69, I enrolled in the Adapted Weight
Training and Sports Education courses at Grossmont
College, after becoming severely visually impaired.
Thanks to the program I regained strength and stayed
with it in an effort to remain independent. It has kept
me focused and physically fit. I tremendously
appreciated and enjoyed the classes offered to me by the
school.
In March 2002, I had a stroke and when the hospital’s
physical therapist asked what my goal for recovery was I
promptly replied “To get back to my classes at Grossmont
College and regain what I’ve lost.” Thanks to the
immediate and practical concerns of Bob Haywood, Head
Instructor, I’ve been able to start my classes again,
and work hard at overcoming my problems.
Bob gave of his own time, without measure, and with no
thought of anything except putting me back on my feet.
He never missed an opportunity to encourage and help,
and he’s watched me progress from a walker, to a cane,
to walking unaided. The physical instruction and the
morale booster saw me through the worst of it. Over the
summer, Bob picked me up several days each week and took
me out and taught me how to walk again.
I truly feel I would not have reached my present state
of recovery without the backup of my program at the
college. All the people within the department are truly
dedicated and since the start of the Fall semester have
been helping me regain my balance, strength and physical
well being.
I want to express my thanks to Grossmont College, and in
particular Bob Haywood, for everything they’ve done.
