Cardiovascular Technology in the News Again!
The Cardiovascular Technology Program was featured at the June 20th Board of Trustees meeting. The faculty and the program were recently showcased in a television program on ITV Cable. The program received positive testimonials from former students and current employers. In addition, the program was featured in the Cath Lab Digest, an international publication. Rick Kirby, CVT department chair, presented a video and a copy of the publication to the Board. Faculty members Jerome Passman and Don Ridgway were also present. They received acclaim for their achievements.

New LRC Home to First Occupants
The Board of Trustees recently toured the LRC. They saw space now occupied by the first tenants of the new LRC. I would like to commend Tim Flood and Walter Sachau, working with Dr. Tom Foster, to make sure that the new occupants and their work materials followed them from former to present quarters. This project is a wonderful new facility for Grossmont College, our first new building in more than 40 years, and we thank everyone involved in helping make it a reality for our students and staff.

LEDI to be Phased Out
We continue to seek ways to save money during these times of major budget and
funding challenges. After careful analysis and review, we are changing the way some
grant-funded programs are administered. As a result, the Leadership & Economic Development
Institute (LEDI) will be phased out.

LEDI’s current grant-funded workforce training programs will remain in the Business and Professional Studies division. To align each grant-funded program with the appropriate department, the Database Specialist training grant will be coordinated by the Computer Science Information Systems department, and the Office Professional Training grant will be coordinated by the Business Office Technology department. Classified staff working on these grants will continue to support their assigned programs. The administrator in charge of these grants will be Fred Allen, Senior Dean of Business and Professional Studies.

With this restructuring, LEDI will be dissolved. The current LEDI administrator, Stan Schroeder, Associate Dean, will be reassigned through an Interjurisdictional Agreement to work fifty percent as the director of the GCCCD Auxiliary Organization, the District’s non-profit entity. His other duties will include supporting the development of grants and contracts for Grossmont College, in alignment with the College Priorities for 2003-2004.

KGFN Radio Student Wins First Place

Chris Davis of KGFN Radio, has won FIRST PLACE in the Audio/Multi-Media Division for the 2003 San Diego County Fair.

Chris’ entry was a Radio Public Service Announcement for the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center. According to the coordinator for student exhibit entries for the San Diego County Fair, Chris’ entry “shined above the others”, and “should be considered a great asset to the program at Grossmont College.” Chris will receive his award at an Awards Breakfast at the Fairgrounds on Tuesday, July 1st.

Kudos also go to Evan Wirig, faculty advisor to KGFN and Media Communications Department Chair.

Middle College High School Graduates

You may recall that in the Fall of 2001 Grossmont College began a program to provide an educational alternative for students from the various campuses of the Grossmont Union High School District. On June 11th, in yet another end-of-year ceremony, we celebrated the first graduating class of Grossmont Middle College High School. Twenty-nine seniors who otherwise might not have completed high school not only met that goal, but they also got a head start on college in the unique program enthusiastically endorsed by the high school district. One student managed to complete 45 college credits during her two years with Middle College. A second cohort of Middle College students began their studies here last fall.

First Summer Readiness Program for EOPS Students
After a year of planning and high school outreach, 33 new high school graduates will be with us on campus this summer and will attend a linked English Fundamentals class and a personal development class, study skills and time management. Many of these students were referred by their high school English instructors and were chosen based both on financial need and educational skill building for college success. Instructor Tony Ding and Counselor Michael Perez combined their syllabi to reinforce the learning in both classes. Just last week, students attended an orientation accompanied by their parents. They met their instructors, EOPS staff and toured the campus, and thanks to Janice Johnson and her staff, are now more favorably positioned for collegiate success.

Evening/Weekend Nursing Program to Pin 20 New Nursing Grads

Please join us Friday, July 11th at 3 p.m. for a pinning ceremony for new graduates of the first class of the Evening and Weekend Nursing Program. You may recall that this program is sponsored by the Grossmont Healthcare District. It was developed as an innovative way to use valuable classroom facilities to train registered nurses in an alternate schedule. Our first ‘crop’ of 20 new graduate nurses will complete their training and receive their Grossmont College nursing pins at the ceremony to be held at the El Cajon Community Center.

Thanks to Dean Shannon O’Dunn for her work to bring this exhibit to Grossmont College during our summer season, and to thereby introduce many San Diego art patrons to our campus.
