Classified Leadership Award

Pat MurrayPat Murray, Grossmont College Senate Vice-President, recently attended the California Community Colleges Classified Leadership  Institute. At that event,  Pat received the CCC Classified Leadership Award in recognition of her outstanding leadership at Grossmont College and District. Please join me in congratulating Pat on her award and thank her for her leadership and energy.
 


Evening/Weekend Nursing Program Graduates First Class
Trustees Rick Alexander and Wendell Cutting attended our event honoring the first 20 graduates of the Evening and Weekend Nursing Program at their pinning ceremony held on July 11.  You may recall that this program is sponsored by the Grossmont Healthcare District.  It was developed as an innovative way to use valuable classroom facilities to train registered nurses in an alternate schedule.

Summer Readiness Program Panel Provides Tips for College Success to EOPS Freshmen
EOPS FreshmenParticipants in this summer’s inaugural EOPS Summer Readiness Program enjoyed a first-hand opportunity to learn useful tips for college success straight from the teachers during a panel presentation.  Assistant Math Professor Beth Smith was joined by English instructor Tony Ding and Librarian Michelle Blackman and Phi Theta Kappa member Steve Nunberg on the panel.  A dozen EOPS students, otherwise through with their classes for the day, chose to take advantage of this opportunity!
 

Grossmont Staff and Students Sweep Awards in Las Vegas Culinary Competition

Four members of the Grossmont College ROP Culinary Arts faculty and staff, assisted by seven students, swept top honors at the Las Vegas Culinary Competition.  Adjunct instructor Chef Mial Parker won gold and silver medals, Best in Show Award, Highest Core and Hot Food Grand Champion.  Chef Joe Orate won the ACF Silver Medal.  Assistant staff Mirella Hinojosa and Keoni Simmons both won honorable mention awards.  Chef Joe reports that the students gained tremendous culinary experience.

Grossmont College Selected for Prestigious Syracuse University Study

Thanks to Sue Jensen and our faculty involved in Project Success, Grossmont College has been selected to participate in a Syracuse University study that will document the effectiveness of programs for academically under-prepared students.  Grossmont joins a select group of six four-year institutions, including two CSU campuses and Temple University, and 12 other community colleges from across the country.  The study’s national advisory board members are nationally recognized experts on learning communities, and represent such institutions as UC Berkeley, American Association for Higher Education, University of Texas at Austin, and Temple University.
