Grossmont Remembers September 11 |
|
| |
|
A campus-wide committee planned a beautiful
and moving ceremony September 11 during the noon hour in the
quad. Our carillon tolled as the honor guard advanced for the
presentation of the colors. Original compositions by
instructor Ron Gillis featured a soloist, counselor Silvia
Montejano, and the Grossmont College Chamber Singers. Richard
Farrell, president of the ASGC, and Professor Taylor McKenzie
shared their personal reflections. It was a solemn and
patriotic event, and we are grateful to Peter White and his
committee for planning such an inspirational event. |

Enrollment Continues to Break All Records |
|
| |
Students continue to come to Grossmont
College in record numbers. The beginning of the Fall 2002
semester drew 18,193 students as reported Friday,
September 6. Our headcount is up 8.1 percent, and until
load is up 9 percent. What is encouraging is that our fill rate has grown to an impressive high of 88.75
percent, indicating that we are placing more students in
each class, and are therefore more efficient in our use of
resources. We have just 20 more class sections in Fall
2002 than at the same time last year.
The following is a comparative analysis of Fall 2002
enrollment as of September 6, 2002, to the same enrollment
dates for Fall 2001.

Financial Aid Services Demand Increases |
|
Increases in enrollment bring increasing
demands for all student services. For example, last year we
had a total of 9,175 applications for financial aid for the
entire year, culminating in a total of $8.1million in grants,
loans, work study and scholarships. This year already we have
received 8,067 applications for a total of more than $9.9
million.
To help better serve our financial aid students, Grossmont and
Cuyamaca Colleges each received $40,000 grants to develop
on-line courses to assist incoming students with the
application process. The courses will also include components
with counseling information. |

Career Expo
2002 |
|
| |

The week of October 21 - 24 is Career Week at Grossmont
College! Festivities begin with the 24th annual CAREER
EXPO 2002 on Monday, October 21, 2002, in the Main Quad.
This event will begin 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 1:00 p.m.
with a luncheon in the Griffin Gate for exhibitors. All
festivities are funded by ASGC.
In spite of the stock market roller coaster ride, wages at
a virtual standstill, and the telecommunications industry
leading the pack of job-cutting industries, San Diego's
diversified economy keeps us growing at a slow and steady
pace. Our unemployment numbers (4.1% for the month of
August 2002) are much lower than the rest of California,
(6.6%) and national average (6.0%). Therefore, over 100
Exhibitors have confirmed that they will be present at Grossmont College on
CAREER EXPO day! Many employers will
be interviewing and hiring on the spot!
Grossmont and Cuyamaca College program coordinators will
also have exhibits and showcase various options for
advanced training and education. East County,
School-To-Career high school students will be joining the
festivities as well. Last year's fair attracted over 2,500
community members, college and high school students. We
anticipate an equally successful turnout for EXPO 2002!

New this year is an
informative poster, and a companion flyer to help
