Student Rally Generates
Support for Prop R |
The student rally, which took place in the Quad drew quite
a crowd and generated awareness among students, faculty
and staff in attendance. Media covering the event
included KGTV-TV Channel 10, KPBS radio, the East County
Californian, as well as the Grossmont Summit. |
Second Eight Week
Classes Begin |
| Students have been enrolling in the
second eight week session since registration for Fall
classes began in July. They take advantage of the option
to take classes in a compressed format and complete
coursework by the end of the semester. As I reported
last month, we have been exceptionally efficient with
class loading this semester, achieving a fill rate of
89.6 percent. |
The Challenge of Success:
Enrollment Management |
| In anticipation of continued growth and the need to plan
for strategic growth management, we formed an Enrollment
Strategies Committee last year to evaluate options and
find creative ways of responding to community needs
while meeting the fiscal challenges presented by the
state budget and by our enrollment cap. We continue to
meet with campus governance constituencies to analyze
the budget and to discuss the implications of unfunded
FTES. Our goal is to sustain the confidence our students
have placed in us by publishing a predictable schedule,
and by encouraging them to register early in order to
access classes they need most. |
Title III Performance Indicators Indicate Success |
We have just received the Title III Grant Performance
Indicators Report for the past academic year. I am happy
to report the following for the second year of this
five-year grant:
- The percentage of tutored students on academic probation
was reduced
by 23.7 percent, from 13.5 percent to 10.3 percent.
- Students who were tutored during the fall 2001 semester
re-enrolled
during the spring 2002 semester at a rate of 77.2 percent, a
rate 18.6
percent higher than those students who were not tutored.
- The proportion of students on academic probation
decreased from the
previous year, a 2.9 percent reduction from the original proportion of
students on probation.

Nearly 300 patrons filled the Grossmont College "Ballroom" in
the Student Center Saturday evening, October 19, to celebrate
the Grossmont College Foundation's Annual Gala Beyond 40
Years. Approximately $40,000 was raised as a result of lively
bidding in the silent and live auctions, the Opportunity
Drawing, and the generosity of event Sponsors. Grossmont
College Cheerleaders and members of the Phi Theta Kappa
Ambassadors group greeted guests and assisted with all aspects
of the event. A gourmet dinner was prepared and beautifully
presented by Aztec Shops. Auctioneer Steve Hamann was an

Letter to the President |
Dear Dr. Martinez:
Recently, I had a nasty fall over a cement
barricade in the parking lot at your college.
I feel that I must let you know how speedily
and efficiently it was handled by your campus
police and nursing staff.
Three students - 2 girls and 1 boy came to my
aid immediately. They were helpful by grabbing
wet paper towels to help clean up the blood
and dirt off my body. One of them called your
campus police and someone let the nurse's
office know, too! They came immediately and I
was taken by cart to the nurse's office.
The nurse took care of my bruised eyebrow,
hand and knee and gave me comfort in a
stressful time for me. She also stressed that
I should go to my health provider (Kaiser) to
get checked out and my hand x-rayed (no
breaks, thank goodness).
I had just enrolled in Roberta Jordan's
English Literature class and had taken
something to my car during a break in class.
Incidentally, Bobbie Jordan, is such a
fabulous teacher, I hope she is greatly
appreciated by the administration. We seniors
sure appreciate her!
