Prop R and Prop 47 Big Wins For Community College Students
Thanks to the foresight of the Governing Board, Chancellor Suarez, and to the hard work of so many committed volunteers, we will now be planning for the facilities improvements to be funded by Prop R and by the state bond, Prop 47. Thanks also to members Alexander and Caruthers for joining us for a campus-wide celebration last week. I would like to specifically acknowledge the work and support of our students, led by ASGC president Rick Ferrell, and for the generosity of their treasury. And, congratulations all around to Trustees Alexander, Caruthers and Clark for your success at the polls as well! Student Rally for Prop R

Media Communications Student Takes 1st Place
Grossmont's own Ruth Castillo-Eggert won first place for Specialty Reporting and second place for General News Story in the radio portion of the San Diego Press Club's 29th annual Journalism Awards competition. Ruth beat out full-time professionals who are paid as full-time employees to report on one subject, as Kenny Goldbert of KPBS-FM, who is a full-time health and medicine reporter. She is a member of the KGFN radio staff.

Successful Foundation Gala Brings Town and Gown Together

Beyond 40 YearsOur governing board members have been busy! I would like to thank members Alexander, Caruthers and Kraft for helping us celebrate "Beyond 40 years" at the Foundation's Annual Gala last month. Nearly 300 patrons, many of them representing our community partners, helped raise nearly $40,000 to further the good work of the Grossmont College Foundation.

Latino Family Conference Held November 9
Grossmont College was the host site of an education workshop for parents of Latino students of all ages on November 9. President Perri and I were happy to see nearly 100 parents come together to explore educational futures for their children. The third annual Latino Family Conference was sponsored by an El Cajon-based nonprofit organization, Excellence and Justice in Education, formed by parents, students, teachers and community members.

World Arts and Cultural Organizing Committee Events
I am pleased to share the news about the exciting calendar of free events planned by the Grossmont College World Arts and Cultural Organizing Committee, known on campus as WACO. Our students have already enjoyed a display of Mexican Culture through the Day of the Dead exhibit held late last month; a performance by Arigon Starr, a Native American vocal artist; a reading by Daniel Reveles, a fiction writer from Mexico; the Club Fest which featured Polynesian Dancers and exhibits by chartered campus clubs. We hope you can attend.

Grossmont Hosts International Film Festival
The Binational Student Film Festival, held on November 16, which was co-sponsored by the BINACOMM Faculty Organization, WACO and the Media Communications Department, included the presentation of juried video programs and screening of short subject narrative video projects. BINACOMM is composed of communications faculty of area community colleges, other colleges and universities, in partnership with colleges and universities in Baja California, Mexico.

Visitors From Russia Learn about Economic Development
Five visitors from St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, and Orenburg, Russia met with Grossmont and Cuyamaca College representatives to learn more about ways we connect with and help local economic development efforts. After hearing about the Customer Service Academy and the REBRAC programs, they toured the ROP Culinary Arts laboratory and visited with students receiving an orientation for their upcoming Local Area Network training classes sponsored by LEDI as part of the Workforce Investment Act grant from the State of California. Their trip was sponsored by Rotary International in partnership with the Open World Program of the Library of Congress, and coordinated locally by the Rancho San Miguel Rotary Club.

Fall Sports Report

Football
The Griffins are 8-1 after a triple overtime loss to Chaffey! There is most likely a post-season bowl bid in the Griffins' future. In three games, the Griffins scored 50 points or more. On November 16, the win over Victor Valley was 52-27. The Griffins will close out the regular season hosting Antelope Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Grossmont College stadium.

Men & Women's Water Polo
Both teams captured Pacific Coast Conference championships this season. Both coaches, Brian Harvey and Larry Larsen, were named Pacific Coast Conference Coaches of the year. It was repeat honor for Harvey, and a nice accolade for first-year coach Larsen. Michelle Vincent was named Women's PCC Player of the Year, while Chase Wylie captured the men's title.

Women's Volleyball
The team is second in the Pacific Coast Conference, with an overall 13-5 and 9-2 in conference play.

Women's Cross Country
In its debut as an intercollegiate sport at Grossmont College, Women's Cross Country is ranked third in the conference. Two women Griffin harriers qualified for the state meet.

Letters to the President

Dear Dr. Martinez:

Professor Peg Hovde is serving a two year term as one of several affiliate delegates from California to the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). Her duties include verifying and updating lists of active and prospective AMATYC members, providing news items to the regional vice-president, and in general, serving as a liaison between two-year college mathematics instructors in California and AMATYC.

AMATYC is a strong national voice for lower division collegiate mathematics education, as evidenced by its major national document, Crossroads in Mathematics: Standards for Introductory College Mathematics Before Calculus.

Marcella Laddon
West Vice-President, AMATYC

Dear Dr. Martinez:

On behalf of the Middle School Drug Prevention & School Safety Coordinators Program, I would like to express my profound thanks to EOPS counselor, Jim Tolbert. Jim was invited to deliver a talk on "Healthy Choices" to an auditorium of middle school students at La Mesa Middle School, during Red Ribbon Week. Being a motivational speaker, I understand the precariousness of this feat. Jim was able to hold the attention of over 200 students for approximately 30-45 minutes. Jim's use of physical objects to accentuate his points was both creative and effective.

As school budgets are being stretched to their limits, schools are increasingly finding themselves lacking the resources to bring in quality programs and people to motivate and educate their students. What a treasure we have in San Diego where we have a storehouse of upstanding men and women who are willing to devote some of their time assisting schools, parents and communities develop healthy students.

Grossmont College is privileged to have such a great natural resource on campus, Jim Tolbert.
