Walk of Fame |
| |
 It
is always gratifying to hear words of praise from
our alumni. Grossmont College alumnus Dave Scott was
especially generous in his remarks upon being inducted into
the Walk of Fame last week. Two of
his former teachers, golf coach Richard McMinn
and English instructor Leonard Pellettiri were on hand, along
with Dave's parents, his parents, wife and children, to hear
Dave's words of gratitude for their dedication and faith in
him as a young student. Thanks to the ASGC, the Grossmont
College Foundation and the Student Affairs Office for their
efforts to create a warm and well-received ceremony and
reception. Scott is KUSI's meteorologist and reporter.

2001-2002 Banner Year for GC Athletics |
|
Grossmont College athletic teams have won so many games and
championships that the campus might well be home to ABC's
"Wide World of Sports." In this academic year, we have six
conference championships: Women's Volleyball, for the third
straight year; Men's Water Polo; Men's Basketball; Men's
Baseball; Women's Tennis; and Men's Swimming. Four athletes
have been named players of the year: Erin Eddington, Women's
Volleyball; John Pearce, Men's Water Polo; John Clark; Men's
Basketball; and Travis Udvarhelyi, Baseball. Four coaches have
been named Coach of the Year: Women's Volleyball coach Missy
Ross in her first year as head coach; Brian Harvey, Men's
Water Polo; Doug Weber, Men's Basketball; and Baseball's Ed
Olson for the fifth time in his career. The Griffin Softball
Team, Men's Volleyball Team, and Men's Tennis placed second in
their respective conferences. |

New Online Application
Earlier
this month, the College introduced on-line application on a
trial, unadvertised trial basis for the first time, making
application available to students anytime and anywhere by
logging on to the college web site and clicking into the on-line
application. All systems are working as planned and on-line
application for the Fall 2002 semester will follow soon. We
appreciate the work of the admissions and records department,
our colleagues at Cuyamaca College, and the district information
systems staff for their collaborative efforts. |

PTK Presents Alumni Key Award |
Office Professional Training Receives New Funding |
| |
Nevada/California
Region's Alumni Association of Phi Theta Kappa, international
honor society for two-year colleges, named Dr. Ted Martinez,
Jr., one of two recipients of the first-ever Alumni Key Awards.
According to PTK, "The Alumni Key Award is presented to the
community college or university president who has shown
outstanding support to the Alumni Association throughout the
academic year. Being awarded the Alumni Key distinguishes not
only the president, it also honors the president's academic
institution." |
Yet more collaboration
led to successful results in obtaining $727,609 in state funds
from the Workforce Investment Act to provide two years of
funding to enable us to keep the Office Professional Training
Program (OPT) serving dislocated workers and displaced
homemakers. Since 1985, the OPT program has served more than
1,600 individuals. Please join us for an impressive and moving
graduation ceremony Friday, June 7, in the Main Quad at 6:30
p.m. State Senator DeDe Alpert has accepted our invitation to
speak.
