Graduation Wraps Up With Thanks to Faculty & Staff

Graduation

Beginning with the Student Scholarship and Achievement Awards May 3, and culminating with the OPT Graduation June 7, Grossmont College faculty and staff orchestrated nine major events. Stages were built and taken down; sound systems hooked up; flowers ordered; programs printed; tables and chairs set and reset, etc. Behind-the-scenes efforts are usually not obvious, especially when everything goes smoothly. I would like to commend Tim Flood, Walter Sachau, Jack Peters, and all the staff whose efforts made these events beautiful and satisfying for our graduates and their families.

LEDI Lands State Grants

Two grants from the State of California enable us to continue outstanding programs, designed for displaced and dislocated workers. The Office Professional Training Program, which just last week graduated its 1,700th participant, will be continued for two years, thanks to a grant for more than $700,000.

The Database Specialist Certificate program, also designed to help displaced workers retrain, will continue for another two years with a half-million dollar grant from the State. Data base participants complete more than 20 college units in three months and participate in an industry internship and receive job search assistance. This project is held in conjunction with the East County Career Center.

Orthopedic Technology
Celebrates 20 Years

Twenty years ago Tom Byrne originated the Orthopedic Technology program on our campus. He developed clinical opportunities for our students at the UCSD Medical Center. The Orthopedic Technology program is highly respected in the health field, and we congratulate Tom Byrne on the 20th anniversary of the program.

Regional Health Occupations Resource Center   Peg Hovde Named Conference Chair for the AMATYC

Effective July 1, the Regional Health Occupations Resource Center will be located here at Grossmont College. It is an honor to host RHORC, one of just four such centers statewide, because the resources available will enhance our health occupations curricula and will further position Grossmont College as a Center of Excellence for Health Occupations.

Congratulations to Peg Hovde, Mathematics Department Chair, who has been named Conference Chair for the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year College’s 2005 conference. Hovde will begin her assignment by serving as the Evaluation Chairperson for the 2003 and 2004 conferences.

Each workshop opens with a public lecture at MoPA in Balboa Park, and is followed by two days of intensive instruction on the college campus. Participants interact with established artists and faculty while they are enrolled in the one-unit course. Workshop titles include The Cultural Landscape in Large Format, July 11-13; Hand Painting on Photographs, July 18-20; The Nighttime Lens, July 25-27; and Montage, August 1-3. The ASGC and the American Society of Media Photographers and Fuji Photo Film U.S.A. help underwrite the series.

Student Rally Protests State Budget Cuts

The Associated Students of Grossmont College (ASGC) organized a high-impact visual rally to protest the $26.8 million proposed cuts in state funding for counseling and other services at California Community Colleges. The rally was scheduled to coincide with "Capital Days" events in Sacramento. Students signed and mailed post cards to the Governor to reinforce the protest. Students from Grossmont, Cuyamaca and MiraCosta Colleges scaled a rock-climbing wall to protest the budget cut. The "Save Our Education" rock-climbing photo was recognized in the May 27, 2002 edition of "Community College Week."

Letters to the President
  Dear Dr. Martinez:

I have just completed the course, Oceanography 112, during the spring semester and wish to express my appreciation for the opportunity to attend such an outstanding class.

For the past thirty-seven years, I have been employed in the electronic field. The classes I have been taking are in the Liberal Arts, for my enjoyment. Serendipitously the only course available on a Thursday night, as I was already one week behind, was Oceanography 112.

Professor Gary Jacobson, Geology, is one of the most enthusiastic instructors I have had the privilege to encounter. A consuming passion for his subject is the only way I can describe his joy in teaching. His models of Tidal Actions and computer exercises on Sediments and Air-Ocean Circulation could have only been developed over time and with many hours of labor. I am looking forward to Professor Jacobson’s Geology class in the fall.

The quality of your instructors and instruction at Grossmont College continues to amaze me. The present generation is truly lucky to encounter instructors such as Professor Jacobson.

I am looking forward to my continuing association with Grossmont College.

Dear Dr. Martinez:

On behalf of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, thank you for authorizing Dr. P.J. Ortmeier to actively participate in a project to develop a plan to integrate the principles of leadership, ethics and community policing throughout the entire Regular Basic Course curriculum for entry-level officers. The plan addressed one of the objectives of POST’S Strategic Plan and was conceptually approved by the POST Commission at its April 10, 2002 meeting in Culver City.

Dr. Ortmeier was an enthusiastic and highly instrumental member of a Steering Committee that met on August 15, 2001, November 15, 2001 and January 29-30, 2002 to provide general project guidelines, scope, advisory direction, and to review the finding of a Subject Matter Expert (SME) Committee. He also delivered an outstanding presentation of his research and published works regarding patrol operations, ethical leadership and community policing to the SME Committee on September 18, 2001. His uniquely qualified expertise and widespread knowledge of leadership and education for the public safety profession, contributed significantly to the success of the project.

It was a distinct pleasure having Dr. Ortmeier as a member of the Steering Committee and for also representing the interests of CAAJE. His contribution was greatly appreciated and spoke highly of his and Grossmont College’s commitment to enhancing the quality of training in California law enforcement.

Forrest G. Lewallen
Bureau Chief, Basic Training Bureau

Dear Dr. Martinez:

Recently, Jeff Lehman, from the Chemistry Department at Grossmont College spent the afternoon at Avocado School leading our GATE (gifted and talented) students in several experiments.

This presentation was arranged through Dr. Flandi, Evening Dean. The arrangement was due to a full calendar of events which prevented our students from visiting your campus as they have done in the past.

I would like to acknowledge our appreciation of Jeff Lehman, who when appraised of our difficulty arranging a date to visit the college, volunteered to come to Avocado School.

Jeff brought all of the equipment and supplies necessary to conduct several experiments that he taught to thirty 3rd-5th grade GATE students. The students were very excited about receiving Chemistry instruction from a “College Instructor”. The event was highly successful and was the next best thing to visiting the college in person.

In closing, I would like to express our gratitude for allowing our students this marvelous opportunity of exposure to the “world of college and chemistry”. We are so appreciative of the support Grossmont College provides for our students (who may be your future college students!) We are grateful for Jeff Lehman’s willingness to travel in order to instruct our students, and appreciate his enthusiasm and wonderful presentation.
