Enrollment Hits New Record
for Spring 2002 Semester
As a result of the outstanding outreach and marketing activities of the past months, Grossmont College's enrollment has hit an all-time high for spring semester, exceeding the 17,000 mark, 17,631, a 7.7% increase in headcount and 9.8% increase in units.. As you may know, enrollment translates into FTES--Full Time Equivalent Students--used by the State of California to provide our general fund budget. Therefore, it is especially good news that the total units taken by our students are up by more than nine percent! We appreciate the important work done by outreach, admissions and counseling staff to help students enroll and register. By the way, did you know that more than 30 percent of our students registered via the Internet for this semester? |

Grossmont
Earns High Marks in Reaffirmation of Accreditation
The College received notification from the Accrediting
Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) that
accreditation has been reaffirmed for the next six years. This
is especially good news, as WASC accreditation is our "license" to provide
educational services. It is also a guarantee to our students and public
that Grossmont College meets WASC standards. Last fall, a 12-member team
appointed by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges
(ACCJC), a part of WASC, conducted a comprehensive visit of Grossmont
College.
Based upon a review of the college's self-study guided by the ten standards of accreditation, the review team met with more than 250 individuals, interviewed a broad representation of the campus community, held three open forums, and systematically evaluated every facet of College operations. On page two, the report cites eight assets that contribute to a quality offering of educational programs and services. The complete Accreditation Evaluation Report, including commendations and recommendations, is posted in a public folder for electronic access through the OUTLOOK system. (Click on Public Folders in the folder list; then click Grossmont; then click Accreditation Evaluation Report). In addition, there is a hard copy available for review in the LRC.I would like to thank the Accreditation Steering Committee, chaired by Sue Jensen and Peter White, for their exemplary work throughout this important process. I would also like to commend Arlene Stone for her superior work coordinating the many aspects of the document preparation process. To see the committee lists, click below: |

Letter
of Commendation #1
| Dear Dr. Martinez:
I have just completed the course English 110 during the fall semester, and wish to express my appreciation for the opportunity to attend such an outstanding class. I am seventy-three years old and have been employed for the pass thirty-five years in the electronic field, designing elevator control systems, and am still employed full time. With the completion of my Exercise Science requirements in the spring, I will be receiving A. A. degrees in Political Science and Economics. Professor Barnier is that unique individual who makes the material comes alive. Being of the scientific persuasion, I did not think it was possible to actually enjoy an English class, what a pleasant surprise. I have seen many syllabuses, but never one with the completeness of Professor Barnier's. I am sure it has been compiled over many years of toil, with many revisions. I have been taking courses since my retirement from the U.S. Navy over thirty-six years ago, and Professor Barnier is one of the best instructors, I have had the privilege to encounter. The quality of your instruction and instructors at Grossmont College continues to amaze me. The present generation is truly lucky to encounter instructors such as Professor Barnier. I am looking forward to my continuing association with Grossmont College.

Letter
of Commendation #2
| Dear Dr. Martinez:
Let me take a minute to let you know what your school has done for my family and me. I am a retired Navy Special Forces Medic (20 yrs) who went to Special Forces medical school (equal to PA school). Two years prior to retiring from the service, the state of CA authorized me to challenge the RN board. I did and I passed. I became an RN working in the ER at UCSD; I've worked there the last three years. My wife and I had a baby girl and decided to move home to Massachusetts. When I tried reciprocity for my license to the state they disapproved me on the grounds that I didn't have a degree in nursing. I have an RN license in good standing, but no degree. So I started my long journey to take my family home. I went to two other Nursing schools in the southern CA area and was told my goal could not be accomplished. They said at the very least I could put my name on a waiting list and, when accepted, I could enroll in a full two-year Nursing program. After twenty years of service, my biggest fear was taking my family home and flipping burgers for a living (not that there's anything wrong with that). So I decided to start nursing school. Then I called your school (Grossmont) and spoke to a young lady by the name of Pat Murray and explained my situation. After lengthy consideration, she called me in and asked me to bring in all my military/medical training certificates. She then set up a meeting with the director of the Nursing program, Elisabeth Hamel. The department (Elisabeth Hamel and Pat Murray) did something that amazed me; they looked at the spirit of the law instead of the letter of the law. They dug through mounds of military documents and problem-solved the situation. The two of them then walked me to a counselor and stated my case. The outcome was unbelievable. The group put together a list of classes they wanted me to complete, a few tests by exam, and a few oral interviews. The conclusion of my story is this: I came to your school with a problem, your nursing department solved it, and I am now taking my family home with my nursing degree and an active license in the state of Massachusetts. Your school truly does serve the community. I thank you and my family thanks you. Tim Rimel, RN |
