Dear Dr. Martinez: Pacific Coast Indian Club (P.C.I.C.) has been indebted to one of your professors, Mr. Tom Gamboa, of The Cross Cultural Studies Department, for many years now. Mr. Gamboa has worked with P.C.I.C. and provided us with 75 to 80 students during the Labor Day Weekend to help us in a multitude of tasks that are necessary to have a successful Pow-Wow. Without Mr. Gamboa's help and guidance, and the 225 to 240 hours that the students so freely give, we would be at a loss to get so many of the jobs done that they do so willingly during this event. I wanted to take this opportunity to make you aware that P.C.I.C. is most appreciative of Mr. Gamboa and his students for all their help and support that they have given at our pow-wows. Phil Saal, |

Enrollment
Continues
to Increase |
||||||
|
The Fall 2001 semester saw an increase in enrollment of 4.55% in headcount, and 4.71% in units when compared to Fall 2000 semester enrollment. This increase follows a record-breaking enrollment during the Summer 2001 session - the highest headcount in the college's 40-year history - a total of 7,485 students enrolled resulting in an increase of 7.72% in units and 4.98% in headcount compared to Summer 2000. These increases are due, no doubt, to the collective efforts of faculty and staff to recruit and enroll students. Plans are now underway for the Spring 2002 semester; hopefully, we'll see another enrollment record broken. |

Our company had the privilege of advertising in the 2001 Athletic Program. We wanted to take this opportunity to commend your staff members who assembled our advertisement. Frankly, I was amazed when I was shown the finished printed product today; it is even better than the draft I submitted for production. The layout is excellent, the printing quality is superb, and the color is an exact match to our actual product. In fact, many of our other advertisers have found it difficult to match the color, and it usually takes several 'tries' to come close. Your experts in Word Processing and Graphics Design got it perfect the first time. Sirkka Huovila was very enthusiastic, proactive, professional and accommodating, keeping us updated throughout the process. Bob Yochum, the graphic artist, creatively put together our ad. John Dixon made available his photography, and Jamie Gassert helped in coordinating the project. We would like to thank and commend the entire Printing Staff at Grossmont College for an outstanding job. Kate Kellough, Vice President |

Football, men's water polo and women's volleyball remain undefeated in conference competition. This week will be important for the men's water polo team, as it plays Mesa (the two teams are tied for first place). Meanwhile, the football team has a major showdown on Saturday at Chaffey College, as two undefeated teams will square off with sole possession of first place in the Foothill Conference at stake. Overall, Grossmont is (6-0), in the Foothill Conference (4-0), and is ranked No. 5 in the state and No. 9 in the nation. In addition, the team has the leading passer and rusher in the Foothill Conference. Nick Forston leads the conference with an average of 279.0 yards per game, while Rey Brathwaite leads the conference with an average of 120.0 yards per game. The Griffins are the No. 1 passing offense in the conference, while they rank third in both total offense and total defense. |

Accreditation
Site Visit Completed
|
||||||
The Accreditation Site Visit concluded last Thursday, October 18, with an oral summary of the team's major findings and recommendations. The full, final report will be sent to the college in late December or early January. The team commended Grossmont College in all areas of campus operations -- our instructional programs and student support services, the exemplary program review process, our connections to the community, our well-founded reputation for transfer and career preparation, the continued improvements in our planning and budgeting processes, our attention to maintaining an attractive and useful campus despite budget limitations, and the overall commitment of Grossmont faculty and staff to the students who study here. The team also found our self-study report to be comprehensive, accurate and well written. The team made a number of recommendations as to how and where we can strengthen the initiatives we've set in motion in the six years since the last accreditation. Among these are a need to update the districtwide Student Equity Plan and districtwide Staff Diversity Plan; enhance certain curriculum-approval processes; improve faculty and staff's understanding of and involvement in planning and budgeting issues; better publicize to students the full range of programs and services at the college; involve students more fully in college governance; and bring to conclusion the large construction projects that are identified in the Facilities Master Plan, including funding for those that do not have State funding available. Overall, it was a very positive report and one that we can all be proud of. The work that each and every one of you have put into making Grossmont College a better place -- in the classroom, in student services, in the business office, on the grounds -- was clear to the Accreditation Team and is reflected in their report. |
