Student Art Displayed in Sacramento
A mixed media show of student art works juried in from the Grossmont College Annual Student Art Show 2001, at the Hyde Art Gallery, has been installed in the new Chancellor's Office of the California Community Colleges in Sacramento. Over thirty pieces of photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry and metalwork, drawing and painting are on display. Many faculty and staff at Grossmont were instrumental in placing the show in Sacramento: Zoe Close (philosophy), Jim Wilsterman (art), Teresa L. Markey (Gallery), Vu Phan (Printing), and Shannon O'Dunn (Dean/Communication and Fine Arts). Funding for the project was provided by the Art Council, Photo Club, Sculpture Club, and Ceramic City (club).

Luiseņo Indian Tapes Preservation Project
Stephanie Mood (English) has been working on the preservation of native cultural songs and stories of the Luiseno people for future generations. The project has successfully preserved oral traditional songs from their original reel-to-reel recordings onto permanent CD's. "Uncle Henry" Rodriguez, a national authority on Indian water rights, began to capture these songs in the 1940's. He has been a consultant to CSU San Marcos since its inception, and the university conferred upon "Uncle Henry" the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, at its 2001 Commencement, on June 3rd. Grossmont College received significant public recognition, at this commencement ceremony, because of Stephanie's work on this project and the assistance provided by Val Eskridge (Instructional Media Center) and Matthew Bell (student technician).

OPT Instructor named National Teacher of the Year
Bob Captain, Office Professional Training (OPT) insurance adjunct instructor, has been selected as National Teacher of the Year by the Insurance Vocational Education Student Training (InVEST), a national education program that promotes insurance as a career field. InVEST also awarded two $1000 scholarships to OPT students, Sara Johnson and Renee McLane to further their education in insurance. OPT is a very successful program that was started in 1985 and has trained more than 1,500 students for the workforce.

LEDI Lands Three State Grants
LEDI Associate Dean Stan Schroeder has successfully submitted and received three grants from the State Chancellor's Office VATEA State Leadership Grants totaling $290,000. The grants support statewide collaboration in three areas: Business Education, Public Safety Occupations, and Health Occupations. Cuyamaca College received two grants, which made the GCCCD number three in terms of the most successful Districts behind Los Rios and Los Angeles Districts. Kudos goes to Stan for getting three out of five grants funded.

Grossmont College Hosts Community Organizations
One of the strategic goals for Grossmont College is to be "visible in the community," and this goal is decidedly being met. Over this past month, several community organizations have held events on our campus. Here are but a few of those: the Rotary Club International (Howard Kummerman) held its annual retreat on May 15; the California South District Optimist International (James Hazelwood) had its regional meeting on May 19; the East County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute (Lois Knowlton) held its "Education Day" on June 8; the Lions Club International (Alba Orr) held a "Learning Day" on June 10. All these events serve to showcase our students, faculty, staff, and campus.
Athletics Department ranked in California's Top 20
The athletes and coaches had an outstanding year, winning six conference championships as follows: Football (Foothill); Women’s volleyball (Pacific Coast); Baseball (Pacific Coast); Men’s tennis (Pacific Coast); Women’ tennis (Pacific Coast co-champs); Men’s swimming/diving (Orange Empire). The following coaches were named Coach of the Year: Dave Jordan (football); Ed Olsen (baseball); Scott Strange (men’s tennis); and Eric Sato (volleyball). Coach Jordan was also named California CCA Coach of the Year. Grossmont College ranked in the Top 20 of the 2000-01 State All-Sports, 19th out of 108 community colleges. This message does not provide enough space to list all the individual achievements attained by the student athletes. A summary is available through Athletics Associate Dean Bobby Thompson.

Grossmont Students Reign at Del Mar Fair
Shalini Patnaik, a Grossmont College student and daughter of Gopa Patnaik, counselor, was chosen Miss San Diego County/Fairest of the Fair 2001 Scholarship Pageant. Her Del Mar Fair Court includes two Grossmont College students: Heather Campbell, Miss Santee; and Celina Mesa, Miss Alpine.
For the past 12 years, Shalini has been performing Indian Classical dance called "Odissi." The three Patnaik sisters recently performed at Grossmont College, and have toured with the renowned sitar player, Ravi Shankar.
GSSQ collaborates with composer Marv Rosen
The Grossmont Symphony String Quartet (GSSQ), resident string quartet of the Grossmont College Music Department, scheduled a special rehearsal in the Hyde Art Gallery as a favor to composer Marv Rosen. Mr. Rosen is suffering from a terminal illness with a short life expectancy. The GSSQ has committed to reading/rehearsing his work. Mr. Rosen will record that reading/rehearsal session to be able to pass on to his progeny. Randall Tweed (music) and Teresa L. Markey, (Hyde Art Gallery) collaborated to make this special rehearsal possible-truly an example of Grossmont College's outstanding faculty and staff.
Parking Lots #4 and #7 Under Construction
Construction began on the upgrading of Parking Lots 4 and 7 on June 12th. The construction contract is for 60 consecutive days, with the contractor being required to finish on August10, 2001. The construction will involve the following: the demolition of the handball courts; grinding and removal of the old asphalt in both lots, adding and compacting new base; the removal of the multipurpose court fencing, planter, and the addition of an entrance on the east side of Lot 4; the laying of new asphalt and striping parking the lots, and much more. Tim Flood, Director/Campus Facilities and Operations, will keep you informed about progress on this major project and is making every effort to minimize any inconvenience to our students, faculty, and staff. He may be reached at Ext. 7653, if you have any questions.
Summer 2001 Experiences Enrollment Growth
Last year, Grossmont was experienced a downward trend for both enrollment and units causing the college a significant decrease in operational revenue because our funding is directly linked to these two areas. In the last year, we have implemented a grassroots marketing and recruitment effort here at Grossmont College to help curb this trend. Since the implementation of this effort, July of 2000, we have been able to make a significant dent in this downward trend. I am extremely pleased with how far we have come. While the numbers for the summer sessions are not final, preliminary enrollment for Summer 2001 has shown a significant increase: as of June 22nd, a 5.3% increase in headcount and a 9.4% increase in units.

Though we have shown this increase, there is still more we need to do. One semester or summer session with low attendance and units can easily nullify our recent increases. I want to thank each of you for your support in this effort, particularly the members of the Marketing/Recruitment Committee: Kim Brooks, Carrie Clay, Wendy Craig, Jim Fenningham; Stan Flandi, Tom Foster, Kats Gustafson, Lois Knowlton, Pat Murray, Shannon O’Dunn, Dana Quittner, Natalie Ray, Marsha Raybourn, Brad Tiffany, and Evan Wirig.

If this upward trend continues, we can increase our revenue thus providing us the means to expand programs, staffing and many other positive things that many of you want for your departments. Without it, who knows what will happen? The end result is really up to all of us.

I will make every effort to send a similar e-mail by the 15th of each month. I look forward to receiving your e-mails by the first of each month. Congratulations to all our students, faculty, and staff, and thank you for all your hard work!

Best Regards,

Ted Martinez, Jr.
