Respiratory Therapy
Students Recognized

Nancy Tendal, program coordinator, reports that several students in the Respiratory Therapy Program have recently received scholarships, two from the California Society for Respiratory Care and one from Coca Cola. Naomi Nonaka received the prestigious award from the American Association of Respiratory Care for the most outstanding second year Respiratory Therapy student in the United States.

Parking Lot Upgrades
The upgrade of two parking lots is underway this summer. Parking Lot #4 is approximately 70% complete and is scheduled to be available in mid-August. Parking Lot #7 is about 95% complete and the final walk-through is scheduled for late July. These upgrades will serve our students, faculty, and staff well.

GUHSD and Grossmont College establish Middle College
High School
Set to begin this Fall 2001 Semester, thirty GUHSD high school students will enroll in the new Middle College High School program at Grossmont College. The program gives an opportunity for High School Juniors to take college/high school classes at Grossmont College. These students will take one college course in the morning; in the afternoon, Cathy Zemlick, Valhalla High School teacher, will teach three high school level classes that are not offered by Grossmont College.

Dr. Lois Knowlton, Dean of Business and Professional Studies, has been working on this program for the past two years. Natalie Ray, Tech Prep Coordinator, has been instrumental in acquiring grants and funding for this program. This program will allow ambitious high school students to accrue college credits before graduating from high school, giving them an opportunity to get ahead start on college.

San Diego CARES event at Grossmont College
Summer Remodeling Projects
Recently, more than 175 San Diego County child care providers gathered at Grossmont College for the kick-off event to introduce the San Diego CARES stipend program. This program supports continuing education through the Community College system for all child care providers. The stipend is provided through the San Diego Prop 10 commission. Its purpose is to improve the quality of child care through retention and education.

Grossmont College set the standard for the other community colleges that are offering orientations throughout the summer. In a countywide survey taken during the Spring semester, Grossmont College was identified more often than any other community college, as the institution a childcare provider would attend classes.

Thanks to Barbara Chernofsky, Virginia Hartnett, and Sheridan DeWolf for organizing the event.

By the end of the summer, a number of improvements at Grossmont College will continue our mission of improving the appearance and functionality of classroom, program, and office spaces for students, faculty, staff and the public. These summer improvements include: 10 classrooms, 2 restrooms, and 4 office remodels; new fencing and handrails; and new A/C units in 2 classrooms and 8 offices; and furniture will be replaced in 29 classrooms and 14 offices. Tim Flood, Director of Campus Facilities and Operations, and Dr. Debra Fitzsimons, Dean of Administrative Services have coordinated these efforts with the District Maintenance Department.

Grossmont College Foundation - Setting Ambitious Goals

The Grossmont College Foundation Board of Directors recently approved ambitious goals to provide support for the college in the coming year. The Faculty/Staff Advisory Committee, chaired by Steve Baker (music), will help to lead the charge in supporting the foundations goals.

The Foundation has set goals in three major areas: Fundraising & Income Goals,
Infrastructure Goals, and Program and Funding Goals. As a reminder, please
SAVE-THE-DATE for Saturday, October 20, for the 40th Anniversary Gala. The event will be held right on campus in the Student Center and will include dinner prepared by Chef Joe Orate and Culinary Arts students, a live and silent auction, and dancing. If you would like to help plan the event, have an auction item to donate, or would simply like additional information, please call Howard Kummerman, Executive Director at 619-644-7109.

Partnership with Vons trains managers

Over 100 managers and assistant managers of Vons stores are taking advantage of Grossmont College training on Microsoft Office programs. LEDI Associate Dean Stan Schroeder reports that they are part of over 300 employees of 61 East County employers to attend workshops since January 1, 2001, at the Grossmont College computer center near Parkway Plaza in El Cajon. The workshop topics include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and QuickBooks. For Vons the training was customized to address the Word and Excel topics of interest to the employees.

The training is provided to students at no cost, with funding from a training grant provided by the California Community College Chancellor's Office. As part of the partnership, Vons provides paid release time for its employees to attend the workshops. Grossmont College instructors teach the workshops from the computer science area. For more information on the workshops, contact Associate Dean Stan Schroeder at 644-7684.
