Innovator of the Year Award
|
|||||
|
It is my pleasure to anounce that two faculty members
will be recognized as recipients of the 2001 Innovator of the Year Award--Dr.
Susan Jensen, for her leadership in the continued expansion of Project
Success, and Biology instructor Michael Golden, for his energetic enhancement
of campus cultural awareness through the World Arts and Culture Organizing
(WACO) Committee. Susan and Michael are highly regarded for their creativity
and tireless dedication, both in their discipline and to these important
Grossmont College initiatives. They will be recognized, along with other
faculty and staff, at the Second Annual Educational Excellence Reception,
scheduled on May 17, 2001, in the Griffin Gate, at 2:30 p.m. More information
will follow.

New Dean of Admin Services
|

|
|
Please join me in weloming Dr. Debra Fitzsimons who is
our new Dean for Administrative Services. She will step in Dr. Mark Facer's
"shoes" after his almost two-year stint as Interim Dean. She
most recently was the Executive Director of Financial Affairs at Youngstown
State University in Ohio, where she provided senior leadership and general
oversight for the financial affairs of the university which included maintenance
of the university's fiscal records, budget preparation and monitoring,
preparation of financial reports, and coordination of business operations
with auxiliary enterprises. Please come and meet Debra at a reception
to be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in the Griffin Gate, at 2:00 p.m.

| 40th Anniversary Celebration! | |||||
|
Plans are underway to kick-off our 40th Anniversary Celebration
with a Pre-Graduation Rally tentatively scheduled on May 15, 2001, at
11:30 a.m., in the Main Quad. A classic car show, music, entertainment,
and "free" food have been included in the plans. More information
will follow as soon as the event is finalized.

Phi Theta Kappa Students

| Two Grossmont College students were elected to the Phi Theta Kappa Nevada/California Regional Board during the Regional Convention held this past weekend April 27-29 at Palomar College. Adam Dince was elected President of the Board and Tanya L. Shelton was elected Vice-President for the Southeast District. The Grossmont College delegation to the Phi Theta Kappa Nevada/California Regional convention included a team of six students: Adam Dince, Tanya Shelton, Marisol Arroyo, Megan Fairbairn, Erika Peters and Gregg Middleton. Israel Cardona, PTK Faculty Advisor, reports that many advisors expressed admiration for the outstanding group of students that represented Grossmont College. Congratulations to all!! | |||||

EOPS - high rate of student
satisfaction

| The EOPS program was reviewed last month by a team of State Chancellor's and EOPS directors from other colleges in the state and its review presented a very positive reflection of Grossmont's EOPS staff and services, and a high rate of satisfaction from students. Congratulations to Janice Johnson, Associate Dean/EOPS, and her entire staff in the EOPS program. | |||||

Outstanding Faculty Award

| Tom Byrne, Occupational Therapy adjunct instructor, was the recipient of the California Community College Association for Occupational Education (CCCAOE) Outstanding Faculty Award 2001. His award was presented an awards luncheon held in San Francisco. Tom's efforts have been meritorious by demonstrating an innovative approach, initiative and leadership to the development and improvement of occupational education. Kudos to Tom! | |||||

| The Professional Resume Writing and Research Association (PRWRA) recently named Nancy Davis, Career/Job Placement Center Coordinator, for the Best Cover Letter award. Nancy received this award for her call to action, creativity, error-free and content. | |||||

Bridge Builder Award

| Congratulations to Dr. Anjennette McFarlin, Speech professor, who was presented the Bridge Builder Award for serving as the chairperson of the PAZZAZ, Inc.s 4th Council District High School Oratorical Contest. Her outstanding contributions and commitment to the children and citizens of the San Diego County PAZZAZ programs has aided in improving the future of our youth by providing customized academic and self-development programs designed to promote personal achievement and self-determination. | |||||
