Specialized Classes and ProgramsDSPS offers a variety of classes that provide students with instruction and practical experience in developing compensatory strategies. Students will learn to use appropriate assistive technology to facilitate their access to educational materials and environments.These courses are intended to enhance students' opportunities for academic success in mainstream courses. Current Course OfferingsAdapted Computer StudiesWith the guidance of instructors and specially trained lab aides, students learn at their own pace in these courses that focus on the independent use of assistive and standard computer software and hardware. All courses are held in the Assistive Technology Center (ATC), which has a large library of instructional and assistive computer software. Access to the Internet is also available.Adapted Physical EducationThe intent of these courses is to help students with disabilities maintain and improve their physical stamina and skill. Adapted physical education classes meet the general education requirements for an associate degree.Developmental WritingComputer-assisted instruction is provided to students in all phases of the writing process, from idea generation to revision. Course assignments are intended to prepare students to enroll in mainstream developmental writing courses.Speech DevelopmentInstruction by a licensed speech pathologist is offered to students with communication disorders including those affecting fluency, voice, articulation, auditory processing, spoken and written expression, vocabulary, memory, and cognitive skills.Strategy Instruction for Students with Learning DisabilitiesSpecialized instruction for students with learning disabilities is provided in applied study strategies to enhance students' academic success in mainstreamed courses.Study Skills and StrategiesStudents are taught key academic success skills and strategies in such areas as time management, study skills, reading, note-taking, memory, and test-taking. |
