  CSIS 151D Online - Project 2

IMPORTANT: BEFORE you can submit this project the instructor must approve your proposal.
Title 

The "Yes we can!" ad.

Naming file 

Make sure it's an unflatted photoshop file (layers preserved) and name it (yourlastname_p2.psd, example: dean_p2.psd). Use the same name for the jpg image.

 How to Submit

You must submit a Photoshop file that shows all the layers and a jpeg file. Submit the Photoshop file and the jpg file as a attachments to your Week 10 discussion on Blackboard.

Your Discussion Board post must include the following:

  • Attached jpg and psd files
  • A write-up that includes:
    • A brief explanation of your project
    • The process you used to enhance and/or correct the photo used on the label and background
    • The problems you encountered and how you overcame them
    • A list of five or more things from #9 in the technical checklist you included in the project (see below)
  • What you learned from the project

Submit Project 2 in the Project 2 Discussion area on Blackboard

    Description 

Before starting do Lessons 6, 7 and 8. Then using those techniques and ones you learned in earlier lessons create an ad for a ficticious product featuring a can of the product. You have your choice of a soda, soup, paint or spray can (Click here for can images).

Here is a gallery of images for inspiration.

Have fun with this, but keep in mind that this could be a possible portfolio piece.

    Project Goal

The goal is to display your mastery of:

  • LESSON 6: Correcting and enhancing digital photograph
  • LESSON 7: Typographic design
  • LESSON 8: Vector Drawing Techniques

Grading 

The project's grading will be broken down as follows:

Technical -
30 pts.
Creativity -
10 pts.
Aestetically Pleasing -
10 pts.
Total -
50 pts.

Your work must include the following technical elements to get a "C" grade. To get an "A", you will use each of these elements effectively and beyond the minimum. Your selection edges must be very clean.

What this project must include

Do the following:

  • Change color of can (see Lesson 2, pgs. 59-61)
  • Place a label on the can (Lesson 7)
  • A background behind the can (Lesson 8)
  • A short ad slogan above the product (humor appreciated)

The label must include the following:

  • A product name in large type (Lesson 7)
  • A drop shadow behind the product name (Lesson 7)
  • A photograph
    • The photograph must be corrected and/or enhanced (Lesson 6)
  • A short paragraph on the label that either describes the product or lists ingredients (Lesson 7)
  • Make the label wrap around the can (Lesson 7)

The background must include the following:

  • An appropriate photo that does not detract from the product being the center of interest
  • This photo should be corrected and/or enhanced ( Lesson 6)
  • A vector graphic that helps emphasize the product (Lesson 8)

In addition use the checklist below for technical requirements:

Technical Checklist:
Print out and check each item completed.

  ___ 1. Appropriate subject matter
  ___ 2. Composite images = 3 to 8. (scanned images, digital photographs, scanned drawings, even scanned items e.g. fabric.)
  ___ 3. # layers = minimum 6, maximum 15
  ___ 4. Resolution = 72 dpi to 150 dpi
  ___ 5. Image dimensions = 8 inches wide x 10 inches high
  ___ 6. All layers must have a brief, descriptive name
  ___ 7 . At least one "type" layer
  ___ 8. Colors used = web safe colors
  ___ 9. You must do at least 5 of the following:
   
___ Make corrections to a digital photograph such as remove red eye and bring out shadow and highlights detail.
___ Adjust the visual perspective of objects in an image using the Vanishing Point filter
___ Apply optical lens correction to an image
___ Align and blend two images to extend the depth of field
___ Use layer styles with text
___ Use guides to position text in a compostion
___ Make a clipping mask from type
___ Merge type with other layers
___ Use layer styles with text
___ Warp a layer around a 3d Object
___ Draw a path using the pen tool
___ Draw and edit layer shapes
___ Draw custom layer shapes
