Week 13 Discussion

Instructions:

By Saturday:

You can simply use the filters in Photoshop to create cast shadows, but often they are not convincing.

Take a moment to look at what shadows actually look like. They are not solid gray shapes.

Shadow Parts

There's two main components of a shadow (see above):

  • The core shadow:
Where the light is blocked from the light source. It is the darkest value on the dark side. The core or darkest value blends into the middle tones from the shadow edge on round subjects.

  • The soft edge:
This is the lighter part of the shadow that if accurately re-created can make a shadow created in Photoshop seem more realistic.

This tutorial deals with shadows in a more realistic manner.

Instructions:

  • Do the cast shadow tutorial at http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/cast_shadow/cast_shadow.htm
  • Use a different photo from the one in the tutorial of a real object, not a cartoon or painting
  • Create one image "Before and After"
    • Include the object with and without the shadow by place them side by side
    • The image cannot more than 8" in any directions at a resolution of 72 dpi
  • Attach the image to your post
  • In the post tell us:
    • What you think of this technique
    • If you had any difficulties and how you overcame them
    • Describe when you might use this technique
