How to Become a Police Officer, Deputy Sheriff, or Highway Patrol Officer in California

Although completion of a POST-certified basic police training program does not guarantee employment as a peace officer in California, any one of the following can be used to complete basic training requirements.  note:  A few agencies may require a graduate of another police academy.

Method A-Full-time Police Academy

Get hired by an agency and the agency will send you through a full-time basic academy (M-Sat, 5-9 months).  agency pays all expenses.

Method B-Full-time Police Academy

Put yourself through a full-time basic academy by finding a full-time academy that takes "open enrollees".  You must pay all expenses. Armed with your academy graduation certificate, apply for a full-time position.

Method C-Extended Format Police Academy

Put yourself through an "extended format" part-time basic academy.  The course is exactly the same as the full-time academy except that it is completed on a part-time basis, usually two nights and one weekend day per week.  Length: up to 18 months.  Armed with your academy graduation certificate, apply for a full-time position.

Method D-Module format Police Academy

Put yourself through a "modular format" part-time basic academy.  the course is exactly the same as the full-time academy except that it is completed on a part-time basis, usually two nights and one weekend day per week.  Length: up to 198 months.  Armed with your academy graduation certificate, apply for a full-time position.

The modular format allows you to apply for and accept an appointment as a reserve police officer or deputy sheriff as you progress through the modules (levels) of the academy (Level III=lowest level, Level II=intermediate, Level I=highest level). Most reserve police officers and deputies are volunteer positions; some are paid. Advantage: allows you to obtain police "experience", based on the level completed.  Also, many agencies prefer to hire reserves as full-time officers.  Grossmont College offers Levels III and II.  Grossmont does not offer Level I.  After completing Level II at Grossmont, a student may enroll in a level I program at an institution that presents Level I.
