Working with community college students is gratifying because of their diverse interests,
needs and levels of preparation. Therefore, helping them select the appropriate course
of study becomes more difficult. Schools too often contribute to the challenging nature of
our work because of the enormously different admission and graduation requirements. Keeping current with each school's
specific requirements is more problematic when the universities change criteria
from one semester to the next. Although complex, helping students sort out
the information and defining their goals is undoubtedly worthwhile. My greatest
reward is being able to see students overcome tough subjects and personal
obstacles. Their year-end celebration with family and friends is the ultimate
reward.
