The President's Corner by Sunita V. Cooke, Ph.D.

There’s no way other than to be blunt: It is definitely a challenge this semester in many regards. All of us are living on a daily basis with reduced budgets, lower staffing levels, record enrollment and higher stress levels. Clearly, it’s not business as usual. Major budget cuts mean fewer dollars available in all areas, including basic skills, disability services, matriculation, extended opportunities and other programs that assist some of our neediest students. Yet our priorities have remained to protect the learning core, balance the employee needs with that of students, fund structural commitments, meet legal compliance and accreditation regulations and fixed increases and maximize potential revenues.

However, I personally commend every employee -- faculty, staff and administrator -- for their hard work, selfless dedication and personal sacrifices during these difficult times.

I am so proud of every one of you, and I certainly appreciate everything you are doing for this college. Thank you for your determination and heroism on the front lines. I applaud each of you for your spirit to excel and endure during rough times. I am grateful to see the concern over stewardship of our resources (human, fiscal and physical) that will enable us to protect our learning core and focus on our key initiatives for the benefit of all. With forethought and planning, you have assumed extra responsibility and gone the extra mile, and you should be praised for it. The results have been extraordinary. I am fortunate to work with such professionals who strive for excellence under the most challenging circumstances.

Indeed, I want you to know that I have noticed there has been no ceiling on effort. With an attitude of excellence, enthusiasm and loyal teamwork, you have put forth the effort in service to students and to one another. And, your efforts continue to produce significant achievements and change lives.

So, thank you for working together. With our best minds and combined energies, we will survive this historic budget shortfall. Together, our collective efforts are the only way to make the difference we make in the lives of individuals each and every day. Thank you for your support and cooperation.

Foundation News

The Grossmont College Foundation, a fund-raising organization that supports Grossmont College students and educational programs, is very excited to host the 2009 Dinner Gala and Auction fund-raiser. The eighth annual Gala will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino. Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a reception and silent auction, followed by dinner starting at 7 p.m., live auction and live entertainment.

Three Grossmont College Foundation Board Members are serving as co-chairs of the event. They include retired City Planner Judy Garrett, Vicki Whitmire of San Diego National Bank’s Navajo Road branch, and Karol Schoen of Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino.

The 2009 theme is “Reaching New Heights With You!” The theme reflects the Foundation’s partnership with the community in assisting the college’s efforts to reach “new heights” in educational excellence, workforce training, scholarship programs and an endless array of new opportunities for students, according to Ernest Ewin, Grossmont College Foundation executive director.

Division and departments are encouraged to buy a table and sit with colleagues. Tickets begin at $200 per person, but significantly discounted tickets are available for GC faculty, staff and administrators. In addition, everyone is invited to donate silent auction items, including gift certificates for merchandise and professional services. Last year’s Gala drew 340 people and netted $64,500.

Proceeds again will benefit student scholarships and underfunded programs at Grossmont College. A donation to the Grossmont College Foundation directly supports students through scholarships, educational equipment and supplies, educational programs and improvements to activities.
