Debbie Yaddow Joins Ranks of Distinguished Faculty

Portrait of Debbie Yaddow

Debbie Yaddow’s nomination for Grossmont’s Distinguished Faculty of the Year arrived at the selection committee on a sea of white caps.

“Debbie was not nominated by one of the faculty members in Nursing,” said Academic Senate President Chris Hill. “She was nominated by the entire
nursing faculty.”

Hill announced Yaddow’s selection as Distinguished Faculty at the general faculty meeting Aug. 13, and the selection drew a standing ovation.

The new honor becomes added to a growing list of awards recognizing Yaddow’s commitment to her twin professions, nursing and teaching. In 2005, she was Grossmont’s commencement speaker; she was also the recipient of the “Faculty Advisor of the Year” award from the California Student Nurses Association, for which she was nominated by her students.

“The fact that the nursing faculty put together the Distinguished Faculty nomination, with the assistance of Bob Yarris and other campus faculty, means more to me than words can express,” Yaddow said in accepting the medallion. “I never thought when I graduated from Grossmont College’s Nursing Program in 1983 that I would be standing here receiving the Distinguished Faculty award. I am extremely honored.”

Yaddow stepped in to steer Grossmont’s Nursing Program through some perilous months in 2006 when due to faculty vacancies, the program was unable to go forward with their National League of Nursing Accreditation. She helped secure a grant from the Grossmont Healthcare District that made it possible to recruit five new full-time instructors this semester and hire enough adjunct members to fill the department’s staffing needs. She and the nursing faculty have begun the process to submit for candidacy status with the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission. Yaddow notes that “The Grossmont Nursing Program is consistently approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, and our graduates are all eligible to apply for State Licensure.”

Along the way, she was selected to serve as the Interim Associate Dean of Health Professions. “She is a strong advocate for the program and has solutions for every problem,” said one faculty contributor to Yaddow’s nomination. “Debbie is generous and very forthcoming with resources and is always ready to intervene on our behalf for any of our needs.”

U-T Readers name Grossmont "Best Local College"

Faculty celebrating this fine achievement

GIZMO, the Grossmont Griffin mascot, joins faculty, student and staff to cheer as Dr. Sunita Cooke accepts the “Best Local College” award from Union-Tribune representative Teressa Fenn.

Readers of the San Diego Union-Tribune confirmed what students have been telling us for years! They selected Grossmont College as the “Best Local College” in the 2007 Readers Poll, which is conducted county-wide. Earlier this year, Grossmont College was also named “Best College” by the readers of the East County Californian.

“Coupled with the fact that 95 percent of our own students agreed that ‘Grossmont is a Premier Community College’ in a separate survey conducted by an independent research organization, being named Best Local College by San Diego Union-Tribune readers is especially meaningful,” said Grossmont College President Dr. Sunita V. Cooke. “We take every opportunity to offer the widest possible array of exceptional programs and services for our students. I am especially proud of the attitude and commitment of our faculty and staff, and their focus on student success. It is gratifying to know that the regional audience appreciates the value we bring to our extended community.”

The poll is strictly managed by newspaper staff, who receive the paper ballots readers clip out of the papers, insert into an envelope, add postage and then mail back.

They check carefully to make sure that each envelope carries just one ballot and that multiple ballots do not come from the same address, and they check handwriting to make sure on one is trying to “stuff” the ballot box.

Grossmont College is entitled to use the “San Diego’s Best” logo as a result of the honor.
