Snapshot of Tina Pitt

Dr. Tina Pitt was officially appointed Grossmont College Vice President, Academic Affairs in December, 2007, after serving as Interim for one year.

Faculty and staff were stunningly amazed as they witnessed Dr. Pitt, along with other members of the S(tudent) L(earning) O(utcomes) Response Team, cheer “Give me an S, Give me an L, Give me an O…SLO” at the spring professional development meeting on January 22, 2008. Other cheerleaders included Dr. Chris Hill, Academic Senate President and Chuck Passentino, Campus SLO Coordinator.

“I firmly believe in partnerships, and hope we can all work together toward the future growth of our community and institution,” said Dr. Pitt. Participation in the cheer routine is only one example of Dr. Pitt’s willingness to work together as part of a team with faculty and staff. She has an open door policy and accommodates those who seek her help.

Dr. Pitt is not only open to working with diverse groups of people, but she also has a very strong educational background and a diverse teaching experience.

New full-time faculty at Grossmont College are beneficiaries of a New Faculty Orientation Program which has recently been expanded to meet the present needs of the campus community.

Grossmont’s orientation program, which includes a full year of programming for incoming faculty, is unique among many community colleges.

Not only does the revamped program help new faculty employees become acclimated to the Grossmont College campus logistics and culture, it now includes up-to-the-minute strategies to enhance teaching and student learning. This second feature of the orientation is designed to focus on guiding new teachers who may be content experts but are new to teaching.

The program for this academic year was developed collaboratively by the Academic Senate President and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Orientation sessions are held in Griffin Gate weekly. The topics are wide-ranging. For example, last August, new faculty members networked over breakfast. Presentations were made by Admissions and Records, Payroll and Bookstore personnel. In September, faculty were introduced to Student Services, Campus Safety, as well as ways to engage students in the classroom. The October meeting was dedicated to Student Learning Outcomes development and assessment. In November, “Student Grading and Academic Dishonesty” and instructors’ role on committees was the topic. In the coming months, “Critical Thinking,” “Curriculum Process,” and many more valuable topics are on the agenda for spring semester.

As more new full-time instructors join the ranks of the Grossmont College faculty, they will engage in the ongoing orientation sessions. They have the additional benefit of meeting other new faculty who are in a variety of academic disciplines.
