Grossmont College enjoys a unique window on the 21st
century’s dominant trend, globalization, through the work
and advocacy of the World Arts and Culture Committee.
Through its programs and presentations, this group continues
to recognize and celebrate the distinct identities of
international cultures within the campus community.
The World Arts and Cultures series of fall semester events
included the “Viva Mexico” celebration, held in the Main
Quad on Sept. 14. This day was a call for the campus
community to experience the colors, music and food of
Mexico. Carlos Contreras welcomed guests and gave an
informational presentation. The Puente Club sold freshly
made tacos and Mexican folk singers added festive music to
the event.
On Oct. 19, an Eastern enchantment spread across the Main
Quad celebrating “Arabic Culture Day.” The Muslim Students
Association provided tastes of Arabic language, food, and
music.
The next mega event will be “Holidays Around the World,”
which is scheduled for Nov. 16. The Sculpture Club, the
International Club, and the Spanish Club (and other language
clubs) will participate in this event featuring different
countries and/or cultures at tables or booths in the Main
Quad. Derek Cannon and his student ensemble will provide
Afro-Cuban music, and Ken Anderson’s student Gospel Choir
will also perform.
World Arts and Culture also helps sponsor other events, such
as the “Navajo Code Talkers” on Nov. 17. The semester finale
will include “Strolling Musicians” from Dec. 4 to 8.
Approximately 30 employees and students are current
committee members, including Sonia Gaiane, Edda
Temoche-Weldele, Kendra Jeffcoat, Yolanda Guerrero, William
Snead, Marilyn Marshall, Carlos Contreras, Paul Vincent, and
Charles Brown. Members are actively involved in planning and
orchestrating these events. Jeffcoat serves as
administrative chair, and Gaiane and Contreras serve as
faculty co-chairs.
