Campus Scene - October 2004
The President's Corner by Dr. Ted Martinez
Dr. Ted Martinez

October was a very busy month here at Grossmont College. Thanks to all who have contributed to the very successful events that enrich the academic experience for Grossmont College students: Career Expo, Transfer Fair, Political Economy Week,
“El Dia de Los Muertos” and “An African Celebration.” Kudos to Howard Kummerman and the Grossmont College Foundation for a spectacular Walk of Fame Gala — yet another outstanding event honoring Walk of Fame honorees and business partners.

I would like to express my appreciation to the faculty and staff members who are participating in the fast-paced selection process to identify and choose up to 16 new faculty. We are enthusiastic about the prospect of welcoming new full-time faculty to join the Grossmont College community in time for the Spring 2005 semester.

The rainy season has hit hard and early this year. We are monitoring our facilities closely and urge faculty and staff to contact Tim Flood or my office as soon as new problems are discovered. You may also follow the progress of remodeling and other ongoing projects on the Grossmont College website “Facilities Updates” under News & Events. Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding as our campus continues to improve.

Respectfully,

Ted Martinez, Jr.

Meet Ken Sobel Grossmont College Foundation President

Ken Sobel“Community colleges are the lynchpin of the state’s higher education system. Not only do colleges like Grossmont provide a bridge to four-year studies for recent high school graduates, they offer opportunities for lifelong learners, and access to retraining for members of our community’s workforce.

However, funding only goes so far—that’s where our Foundation comes in—to help bridge the funding gap for programs we know are important but which do not always receive priority for state funding, such as athletics and theatre arts. Further, we know that our students are among the most vulnerable to the spiraling cost of higher education, and we are committed to helping them cope with this challenge through our scholarship program.

We have established strategic plans for our Foundation, including increasing our annual fundraising goals, preparing for a capital campaign, and growing our business partnerships. I am looking forward to continuing a productive relationship with Dr. Martinez and the exceptional administration at Grossmont College.

The Foundation exists to serve Grossmont College and ultimately, Grossmont College students. I am honored to serve as president, and encourage everyone to give whatever amount you can to support the work of the Foundation. Every contribution makes our work that much more effective.“

Editor’s Note: Trial attorney Ken Sobel has a busy legal practice, and has earned the highest rating in the prestigious Martindale-Hubbel Legal Directory.
