PTK International Honor Society Inducts New Members

More than 60 students accepted the invitation from Phi Theta Kappa to join the international honor society’s Grossmont College Beta Theta Chi chapter. Students are eligible to join based upon their classroom and community achievements. Induction ceremonies were held Dec. 1.

“If you have been invited to join our society, congratulations,” said Suzanne Mitchell, president of Beta Theta Chi, Grossmont’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. “Your hard work has paid off.”

Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society, represents high achievement and academic excellence. The society is distinguished by four hallmarks: scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

PTK Organizes Navajo Code Talker Event

Navajo Code TalkerJoe Morris, Sr., captivated the Student Center audience during his presentation as part of a series of seminars organized by the Grossmont College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Morris is one of a handful of surviving WWII Navajo Code Talkers. Morris’ presentation was co-sponsored by the Grossmont College Foundation, the Cross-cultural Studies Program and the World Arts and Cultures Committee.

invites a series of guest speakers to the twice-monthly chapter meetings. In November, the chapter also organized the campus appearance of Joe Morris, Sr., a member of the famed Navajo Code Talkers who provided secure communications for the American military in the Pacific in World War II.

The Beta Theta Chi chapter consistently earns “Five Star” chapter ratings from the national Phi Theta Kappa organization, as a result of outstanding chapter programming and campus contributions. Victoria Howitt and Tony Ding serve as chapter advisors.
