Campus Scene - November/December 2005
The President's Corner by Ted Martinez, Jr.
Dr. Ted Martinez, Jr.

From culinary arts to debate to athletics, Grossmont College students are winners! As the pages of this issue of Campus Scene illustrate, we are indeed a “premier” community college! We have just learned that the readers of the East County Californian have honored us by voting Grossmont College “Best College” for 2005.

It takes a great team to make a great college, and I would like to thank every member of our Grossmont College team for working together every day to help and inspire students, and to make our learning environment even more productive.

This issue of Campus Scene marks the end of our fall semester which concludes the first half of our 45th academic year. We are making great progress with our facilities: the Science Laboratory Building continues to rise before our eyes; the groundbreaking for the new Digital Arts and Sculpture Building Complex was a lively and meaningful ceremony; and we prepare to open the new life safety road, to be known officially as Grossmont Perimeter Road, in time for students to begin their classes January 23.

Speaking of the spring semester, I would again ask that everyone help us spread the word about opportunities to enroll. Adult Reentry sessions will be held January 4 and 5. Our spring promotional campaign features the “Brighten Your Future” theme. Look for our ads, listen for our radio commercials, and remind your families and neighbors that Grossmont College is indeed the very best!

Please enjoy a relaxing and safe winter break. I wish everyone the most wonderful of holidays, and a very happy and successful 2006.

Respectfully,

Ted Martinez, Jr.

Giving …Empower Their Dreams
Help Students - Give Today!
Giving.....Empower their dreams.Ideas for year end giving to the Grossmont College Foundation.

Gifts of Cash
Cash contributions are deductible as an itemized deduction in the year you make the donation. And, with the Katrina Emergency Relief Act (KETRA), through the end of this year you can give up to 100% of your adjusted gross income. You can even give through your IRA.

Gifts of Securities
The best stocks to donate are those that have increased in value – particularly those producing a low yield. If you have held a stock that has risen for more than one year, you pay no capital gains tax when you make the gift and are entitled to a charitable deduction. There are also options for donating other appreciated and depreciated securities as well as mutual funds.

Gifts of Life Insurance
You can contribute a life insurance policy to us by naming us as either the owner of the policy or simply as the beneficiary. You may receive a substantial tax deduction for your gift.

Gifts of Real Estate
If you own property that is not subject to mortgage and has appreciated in value, a charitable gift may be an attractive option.

Life Income Gifts & Charitable Gift Annuities
Life income gifts allow you to receive an income as a result of making a charitable gift. Depending upon the type of plan you choose, the payments can be fixed or variable and can be for you or other beneficiaries you choose.
