The Grossmont College Department of Dance presented its faculty dance
concert, “Entrances and Exits” at the Kroc/Salvation Army Performing Arts
Center in late November. Featured in the concert were works choreographed by
dance faculty Kathy Meyer, David Mullen, Colleen Shipkowski, Marta
Jiacoletti, Debi Toth, Alison Cutri, and Nancy Boskin-Mullen. Two students,
Katie Brown, a returning alumna, and David Simmons, were also selected to
choreograph. In addition to choreographing, Jiacoletti and Boskin-Mullen
performed in their own pieces.
The program highlighted the diversity of the department, with an extensive
offering of ballet, modern, post-modern, jazz, tap, and hip hop. The dance
department presents two concerts yearly, which serve an average of 100
students. More than 1,200 students, faculty, family, friends and community
members attended the concert over the course of the three performances.
David Mullen, who co-directed the concert with department coordinator Kathy
Meyer, commented on the focus of the concert, “From a department
perspective, the emphasis of the concert is really twofold. While the work
itself is important, as it should be, it is equally important, because we
are working in an academic environment, for students to be able to have the
opportunity to experience the creative process, from rehearsals to
performance.”
Mullen expressed how pleased he was with the production, stating that “the
concert achieved everything we could have asked for. I think that we were
successful in continuing the high caliber of performance that our audiences
have come to expect. The students worked extremely hard through a difficult
period. Many rehearsals had to be cancelled due to the recent school
closure, and the students really stepped up and voluntarily committed to
extra rehearsals that had to be scheduled. Kathy and I are both extremely
proud of all the students who took part this semester.”
The department will present “Breaking Boundaries: An Evening of New Works”
on April 29, 30, and May 1, 2004. The concert will again be held at the Kroc
Salvation Army Performing Arts Center and will highlight works choreographed
by selected students. |
