The President's Corner
by Dr. Ted Martinez, Jr.

While it would seem that everyone was focused on the budget impasse in Sacramento, I am pleased to report that we are making significant progress here on our campus. Summer session 2003 is almost a memory. We served as many students as last summer, but with fewer class sections.

We have begun the move into our first new building in more than 35 years, the Library/LRC. The faculty and staff are ecstatic about their new facility. With the passing of Prop R, we can look forward to additional new facilities. The initial use of Prop R funds began with several summer projects. In addition to painting, roofing and energy conservation projects, we are experiencing the remake of the Main Quad and entrance to the remodeled LRC, which will also house a Technology Center.

I wish it were possible to provide you with good news about the state budget. With your support, we have planned and prepared for these hard times. Our task becomes even more difficult as we move forward. We will need to continue our budget freeze guidelines with increasing scrutiny. In an effort to continue to cut costs, the Campus Scene will be distributed electronically to our Grossmont College site beginning with this issue.

The summer months are moving by very fast. In a few weeks, we will be starting our Fall 2003 semester. During the 2003 General College Forum, I will provide an update on our Strategic Plan achievements; Pat Bennet will make a presentation on Intercultural Communication; and we will showcase the Music Department, the LRC/Tech Center remodel, and our new Resource Development initiative.

I look forward to seeing you August 18. Please continue to enjoy the summer!

Respectfully,

Ted Martinez, Jr.
