Michael Barendse, instructor of Accounting, earned an MBA from
UCLA. He is also a licensed CPA in the state of California. As an adjunct instructor, Michael taught graduate and
undergraduate business and accounting courses at Cerritos
College, Marymount College and Webster University.
Michael has also held professional positions outside of
teaching including, chief financial officer of Marymount
College, chief financial officer and senior vice president
for Mysmart.com, vice president and chief financial officer
for American Golf Corporation, vice president and controller
for Sony Pictures Entertainment, and senior manager for
Ernst & Young.

Cheryl Campbell, instructor of Health Education and Exercise
Science, earned a Master’s degree in Education from Azusa
Pacific University and a Bachelor’s degree in Physical
Education from California State University, Hayward. Cheryl previously taught Health Education and Exercise
Science as an adjunct instructor at Grossmont, Southwestern
and City Colleges. She was also a full-time instructor at
Mills College in Oakland, California. During her time there
she had ancillary administrative responsibilities and was
also involved in the development of curriculum for women’s
health and served on numerous committees.
Prior to Cheryl’s entry into college teaching, she owned her
own business – KC Sports Enterprises. Programs included
water fitness for adults, a women’s basketball league and a
developmental skills camp for youth. These programs were the
first of their kind in the area in which they were
developed.

Gareth Davies-Morris, instructor of Humanities, earned a
Bachelor of Arts degree and a dual Master's degree in Fine
Arts and in British Literature from San Diego State
University, as well as a DEA in Anglo-Saxon Cultural Studies
from the University of Provence in France. He is now ABD for
his Ph.D. in Science Fiction Studies at the University of
Reading in England, pursuing his interest in the writings of
H. G. Wells.Gareth taught for a number of years as an adjunct instructor
in both the United States and France. His teaching has
included a variety of humanities, literature, and
composition classes at San Diego State University, Grossmont
College, the University of San Diego, Woodbury University,
and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. He
has also taught American history, speech communications,
political science, and various levels of English for the
French university system. From 1997 to 2002, he worked as an
instructor and activities coordinator for Academic Studies
Associates, an American high school summer program based in
Nice, France.

Angela Feres, instructor of History, is working on her
doctoral dissertation in History in conjunction with a
second Master’s degree in Religion from Claremont Graduate
University. She completed a Master’s degree in History from
San Diego State University, where she also earned a Bachelor
of Arts degree. Angela currently teaches History part-time for Grossmont
College. She also teaches part-time in the Social and
Behavioral Sciences Department at Chaffey College. She is an
alumnus of Grossmont College and says that her motivation
and inspiration to pursue graduate studies came from the
encouragement and support of the faculty at Grossmont
College. Working here as an adjunct instructor has allowed
Angela the opportunity to “give back” to her college
community by teaching a variety of History and World
Civilization classes.

Tate Hurvitz, instructor of English, holds Doctoral and
Master's degrees from the University of California,
Riverside, and a Bachelor's degree in English from the
University of California, Santa Barbara.
Tate's teaching experience includes adjunct instructor of
Rhetoric and Writing at San Diego State University; Lecturer
in English and English as a Second Language at the
University of California, Riverside; teacher of a British
Literature Survey course for CSU Fullerton; and Introduction
to Literary Analysis, Literary Analysis and Composition, and
a Senior Seminar in Liberal Studies for the University of
Redlands.
Tate served as Teaching Assistant at the University of
California, Riverside, where he lectured on 18th Century
Literature and also
Taught Freshman Composition. A competitive swimmer in
college, Tate served as an Assistant Swimming Coach at the
University of California, San Diego, and as a coach for the
Riverside Aquatics Association.

Steve Johns, instructor of Exercise Science, holds a Master’s
degree in Sports Science from the United States Sport
Academy, a Master’s degree in Education and a Bachelor of
Arts degree in Political Science from Occidental College. Steve brings many years of football coaching experience to
Grossmont College. He was a defensive coordinator and
special teams coordinator for the University of La Verne,
graduate assistant football coach and assistant football
coach for the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, special
teams coordinator and defensive line coach for the
University of San Diego, and assistant football coach for
Occidental College.
In addition to Steve’s coaching background he has also
taught Social Studies and Physical Education for the
Glendale and San Diego Unified School Districts.

Beth Kelley, instructor of Exercise Science and Wellness,
earned a Master of Science degree in Exercise Physiology
from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, a Bachelor of
Arts degree in Physical Education from San Diego State
University, and an Associate of Arts degree in General
Education from Santa Rosa Junior College. Beth taught full-time in the Department of Kinesiology and
served as a new faculty mentor at San Francisco State
University (SFSU). In addition, she served as director of “FitnessPlus,”
the SFSU campus faculty and staff wellness program. Beth
taught a variety of physical education, health and life
science classes as an adjunct instructor in the Physical
Education and Athletics Department at Santa Rosa Junior
College. She was also a guest lecturer in nutrition and
weight control for the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and
a graduate teaching assistant for the Department of
Kinesiology while there.

Helen Liesberg, instructor of English as a Second Language
(ESL), earned both a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics
and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from San Diego
State University. Her Associate of Science degree is from
Grossmont College. Helen has worked at Grossmont College as an adjunct
instructor in ESL teaching intermediate grammar, reading,
vocabulary development, writing and advanced reading
comprehension and is currently the coordinator of the
American Collegiate English Program (ACE).
Helen has also been a Student Services Specialist and
Financial Aid Assistant here at Grossmont College.

Barbara Loveless, instructor of English as a Second Language
(ESL), earned a Master of Arts degree in English as a Second
Language from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies and
Planning from Sonoma State University. Barbara has more than 20 years of teaching experience in the
field of ESL and served as an adjunct instructor for
Grossmont College since 2003. Additionally, she has been an
instructor for the Institute for English Language Education
at the University of California, San Diego, and a Business
English Coordinator. Barbara served as an adjunct instructor
of English to Speakers of Other Languages for Miramar
College and was also a full-time career instructor of ESL in
the English Foundation’s Program for Hawaii Pacific
University in Honolulu.
Other related positions include: Coordinator of EFP
Orientation-Retention Activities at Hawaii Pacific
University, Honolulu, and an English teacher at the Osaka
YMCA.

Susan Mason, instructor of Nursing, holds a Master’s degree in
Nursing from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor’s
degree in Nursing from National University.
Susan’s teaching experience has been with the Sharp Rees-Stealy/Point
Loma Clinic and includes Nursing Orientation, Out-patient
Diabetes Survival Skills, and CPR instruction. At Sharp
Cabrillo Hospital, Susan developed an Oncology and
Chemotherapy Home Study program, and was a certified
Diabetes Educator.
She has held numerous professional nursing positions at both
Sharp Rees-Stealy/Point Loma Clinic and at Sharp Cabrillo
Hospital including, Medical Center Supervisor,
Administrative Nurse II, Clinical Nurse III, and Charge
Nurse-Diabetes Unit.

Michele Perchez, instructor of Biology, earned a Master of
Science degree in Biology from the University of California,
Riverside, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from
California State University, San Bernardino. Michele honed her microscopy skills while a student
researcher at the University of California, Riverside, where
she also discovered her talent as a teaching assistant. She
taught Principles of Biology, General Biology I,
Introduction to the Biological Sciences I, General
Microbiology, and Paramedical Microbiology while an adjunct
faculty member at Southwestern, Cuyamaca, Miramar, Mt. San
Antonio and Grossmont Colleges.
Michele was also the recipient of a National Science
Foundation Pre-doctoral Fellowship and the Newell Travel
Grant from the University of California, Riverside.

Priscilla Rogers, instructor of International Business, earned
a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the
University of San Diego with an emphasis in International
Business. Priscilla’s teaching experience includes adjunct positions
at Grossmont College with classes in Introduction to
International Business, Principles of Management, Global
Sourcing, Retail Buying, and Managing Cultural Diversity.
She taught business courses part-time as well for California
State Polytechnical University, Mira Costa College, and the
University of San Diego.
Priscilla has extensive experience in international
marketing and business with companies such as The Paper
Magic Group, Sewco, Porter International, Beebas Creations
and Sears & Roebuck International as well as being the owner
of a small glass jewelry company.

Pete Schmidt, instructor of Humanities, earned an Associate of
Science degree in Motion Picture & Television Production
from Scottsdale Community College, a Bachelor of Arts degree
in Humanities, a Master of Arts degree in Humanities from
Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in the History of
Science & Technology from the University of Minnesota. Pete’s teaching experience includes positions at Arizona
State University, University of Minnesota, Hamline
University, and Mesa College where he taught such courses as
Introduction to the Humanities, Introduction to History of
Science, Technology and Western Civilization, Ethics in
Science and Technology, and Science and Literature.
Pete was also a part-time exhibit researcher and designer
for the Science Museum of Minnesota, and exhibit researcher,
designer and curator for The Bakken – A Library and Museum
of Electricity in Life, also in Minnesota.

Allison Shearer, instructor of Biology, earned a Bachelor of
Science degree in Biology from the University of Kentucky
and a Master’s degree in Biology from the University of
California at San Diego. Allison taught General Biology at Palomar and Miramar
Colleges; Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology at
Southwestern College and Human Biology, Human Dissection,
and Human Physiology at Mira Costa College. She has also
taught Human Physiology, General Biology, Human Heredity and
Human Dissection at San Diego City College; Principles of
Biology at Grossmont College; and, Biological Sciences I at
Miramar College. Allison also taught full-time for Mira
Costa College in the area of Human Anatomy.
Allison was the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching
Award from the University of California at San Diego; the
Chapman Scholar Award from Salk Institute; the G. F. Ribble
Award from the Ribble Foundation of the University of
Kentucky, and the HHMI Research Award also from the
University of Kentucky.

Karl Sherlock, instructor of English and Creative Writing,
earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of
Arts degree in Literature from the University of Wisconsin,
Milwaukee. After studying in Europe on a Fulbright
Scholarship, he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in
Creative Writing from the University of California, Irvine.
For the past 22 years, Karl's repertoire as an English
instructor has run the gamut of courses in Developmental
Writing, Creative Writing and Literature. In California, he
has worked for UC Irvine, UC San Diego, SDSU, Mesa College,
Palomar College, Saddleback College, and Grossmont College;
elsewhere, he has worked for SUNY Binghamton, Broome
Community College, and the University of Wisconsin,
Milwaukee.
Karl has also held other professional full-time and
part-time positions outside of teaching.

Christi Vicino, Program Coordinator and instructor for the
Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program, earned a
Bachelors of Arts degree in Education from National
University and her OTA degree from Mt. St. Mary's. Christi taught part-time for the Cajon Valley Union School
District and Grossmont College and full-time at Maric
College. She has held a number of professional positions
outside of teaching and is a member of OTAC, AOTA, NBCOT and
CBOT. Christi served as Treasurer of the San Diego Chapter
of OTAC and was Associate Director of the Chapter from
1997-1999. She served as a recruiter for Sundance
Rehabilitation at the OTAC Conference in 1998 and marketing
representative for Eloise R. Johnston and Associates. |
