Dean Colli, Ed.D Congratulations to Gary Phillips, who joins the prestigious ranks of Distinguished Faculty! One of the many pleasures of opening a new academic year with the President’s Convocation is the opportunity to honor one of our own, the “best of our best.” Thanks to the Academic Senate Selection Committee for their excellent selection.

It is a pleasure to welcome everyone back for the beginning of Grossmont College’s 46th academic year. As we memorialize Jack Hansen, the college’s founding president, it is clear that those early pioneers planned well and focused on developing a solid academic base for this institution. It is also important to note the passing of Wendell Cutting, a passionate and generous trustee, who left a legacy of caring for our students, especially those in great need. It is due in no small part to the Jack Hansens and the Wendell Cuttings of this world that Grossmont College is the fine institution it is today.

Enrollment is now more important than ever. Thanks to everyone who has made superior efforts to help us help students find their way to Grossmont College. Please don’t forget to encourage students to enroll in late-start, short-term, and second eight-week classes.

The fall semester will rapidly unfold before us. The Griffin football home season opens September 9 at 3 p.m. vs. our perennial competitor for the state title, College of the Canyons. The game will be preceded by a tailgate event, so please plan to attend and support the home team. Remember, we are defending national champions! Baseball fans are anticipating the Foundation night at the Padres on September 20. A Bar B Que in the Main Quad at 4:40 p.m. kicks off the event. Please help us celebrate the Grossmont College Foundation’s sapphire anniversary at the Walk of Fame Gala October 21. A campus committee is hard at work planning to make it the best gala ever.

Grossmont Foundation

The Grossmont College Foundation announces the appointment of Ernest Ewin as Interim Executive Director. Ernie is not only a Grossmont College graduate himself, he was also president of the Associated Students of Grossmont College (ASGC), and has been an active member of the Foundation Board of the Directors for several years. He recently completed a four-year term as chairperson of the Prop R Citizen Bond Oversight Committee, and currently serves as a member of the La Mesa City Council.

According to Ewin, “After visiting with a number of classified staff, faculty and administrators, I cannot tell you how excited I am to return to the Grossmont Campus after starting out here in 1966. As the interim executive director of the Grossmont College Foundation, I sense an energy on campus that is highly supportive of our students and helping to address their needs. After 60 days on-the-job I know that working together, through the Foundation, we can make great progress.

The first opportunity to build on our collective relationships will be the Foundation sponsored Annual BBQ/Padres game on September 20. Tickets are going fast, fast, fast!

The cornerstone of our Foundation fund raising activities takes place as this year’s Walk of Fame Dinner Auction and Gala, Saturday October 21, 2006 at Barona Valley Ranch Resort. Through the efforts of event subcommittee chairs Beverly Wight (Auction Items), Alba Orr (Campus wide Baskets), Victoria Howitt (Volunteers), Tammy Huston (Entertainment), Pat Murray (Decorations), Sirkka Huovila (Word Processing) and Gaydeen Dollar (Finance), we are looking forward to our most productive gala ever. We also thank Jamie Gassert and Roz Scott (Graphics and Printing), and Logan McIntosh, Foundation Events Coordinator, who round out our current team.
