- Web based Health Assessment
Visit one of the
health assessment websites indicated in the
Health
Links page of the course web
page. Evaluate the results addressing the areas in your health that
may be improved. Include in your evaluation some realistic health
goal to achieve in order to improve your health.
- Know Your Numbers
Include
your weight, height, body mass index, blood
pressure and body composition and an evaluation
of the results. You can get your blood pressure
reading and your body composition assessment at
the women’s P.E. office room 412. You may obtain
your blood cholesterol and sugar for extra
credit. Your evaluation should address whether
your numbers are within the normal range? If
not, suggest what strategies you can employ to
improve them?
- Cardiovascular Fitness Assessment
Calculate your Target Heart Rate by following the directions in the
handout. Walk briskly or run/jog for a mile and half. Take your pulse
as soon as you finish. Record the time it took you to complete the distance.
Evaluate your performance according to your text. Did your heart rate
fall in the target heart rate range? What can you do to improve your
cardiovascular fitness? (20 points)
- Oral Report/ Poster Board
Choose a topic in health of interest to you and present it to the class
in the form of an oral report where you tell us what the article/book
is about. You may choose to develop a poster board on a specific topic.
Please discuss your topic material with the instructor prior to your
due date. Be prepared to answer some questions on it. (20 points)
- Nutrition Analysis
Record your food intake for one week day and
one weekend day. Rate each day separately.
A. Go to the Center for Nutrition Policy
Promotion http://www.usda.gov/cnpp/ Once you are
in the site. Go to the right column in the page
titled projects. Under projects, click on
Interactive Healthy Eating Index. You will need
to register your name to log in. Rate only one
day food intake.
B. Print out the results of your food analysis
and evaluate the results.
C. Your evaluation should answer the following
questions:

Food Guide Pyramid?
Are you meeting all your dietary needs such as
calories, protein, fiber, calcium, iron, folic
acid etc?
Are you exceeding the recommended amounts of
total fat, trans fats, cholesterol, or sodium?
How was your food intake on the weekend
different from the weekday?
How can your food intake be improved?
Turn in the following print outs: List of foods
consumed, Food display, Your Food Guide Pyramid,
Healthy Eating Index, and a hypothetical one day
balanced diet.
