Neill to play for Biola next season

(4/20) Griffins soccer player Bryna Neill (Number 5 in the photo below) has signed with Biola University to play soccer for the Eagles in the fall of 2006. Neill, a graduate of Grossmont high school, was a two year player for the Griffins were she was team captain in '04 & '05. She was an All-Pacific Coast Conference selection in 2005. Neill helped lead her team to the PCC title in 2005. She was voted most inspirational player both years. In addition to the soccer scholarship, Neill was also asked to serve as one of the team captains for the Eagles for the upcoming 2006 season.


Hawver named U-T Coach of the YearCoach Hawver

Jan. 4, Grossmont women's soccer coach Howard Hawver was named the San Diego area coach of the year by Mark Zeigler of the San Diego Union-Tribune. The honor is part of the paper's fifth annual awards honoring those involved in soccer with San Diego ties at any level. Hawver successfully guided five teams to league titles last year. The Grossmont women won the PCC crown with a school record 20 wins. His Patrick Henry High School varsity girls won the Eastern League. Hawver's three teams (under 11 girls, under 16 girls, under 16 boys) from the PQ Premier club won their titles in the Presidio League. Those club teams had a combined record of 35-1-4.


Griffins fall to Pierce 1-0 to end season

Grossmont saw its successful 2005 come to an end Tuesday as LA Pierce handed the Griffs only their fourth loss of the season. Grossmont finishes with an overall record of 20-4, and won the PCC Championship.


Alexis Zukowski picked as PCC Athlete of the WeekZukowski

Zukowski, a sophomore forward from Nile C. Kinnick High School in Okinawa, Japan, and a transfer from Southern New Hampshire University, scored two goals to lead the Griffins past Ventura 5-0 in the first round of the State Community College playoffs.
Kukowski, the conference season leader in goals and points, tallied the game’s first goal in the 10th minute, then added another goal that put the game out of reach at 3-0. Alexis joins teammates Stephanie Garcia and Lisa Mix who were also named athletes of the week this season.

Two goals by Alexis Zukowski and two spectacular saves by goalkeepers Brittany Ester and Tali Togisala led the Griffins to a 5-0 first round victory over the visiting Ventura Pirates. The Lady Griffiins (20-3-0) got off to a great start in Saturdays first round playoff game during the tenth minute when Zukowski beat a Ventura defender to the ball and put one  past the goalkeeper. Zukowski later scored the third goal for the Griffins. With the score 3-0, Ester made a spectacular diving save to push the ball wide of the goal. Togisala later made a save tipping the ball up and off of the crossbar. Lisa Mix, Brittany Neill and Rochelle Nixon each score a goal in the win.



Griffins advance to second round vs. LA Pierce

As a result of their win over Ventura, Grossmont will face LA Pierce (#1 seed) in the next round of the Southern California regional playoffs. Pierce defeated #16 Chaffey 1-0. The two teams have faced each other twice already this season with Pierce coming out on top both times by a score of 1-0. The first meeting was at the Victor Valley "Duel in the Desert" tournament. The second meeting was at LA Pierce. Grossmont is the PCC champion and LA Pierce is the Western States-South champion.

Grossmont hosts playoff game at SDSU

Grossmont the #8 seed in the Southern California regional playoffs, will face the Western States conference champion Ventura (#9 seed) on Saturday. It is a home game for Grossmont, but the game will be played on November 19th on the sports deck at SDSU at 2:00 p.m. The last meeting between the two teams was in 2000 during the playoffs. Ventura won that meeting 2-0 at Ventura. The all-time record between the two teams is 1-1. The venue change was necessary because the Grossmont football squad is also hosting a playoff game on Saturday.

Honors for PCC Champions, Grossmont

Six players from Grossmont's 2005 PCC championship soccer team have been selected for all-conference honors. Sophomore forward Alexis Zukowski was selected to the all conference first team. Zukowski led the PCC in scoring with 15 goals and 10 assists, good for 40 points. Joining Zukowski on the first team were freshman forward Sage Gutzmer (El Capitan High), freshman midfielder Adrianna Aguillon (Chaparral), freshman defender Brittny Neill (Grossmont High), freshman defender Stephanie Garcia (Chaparral AZ), and freshman defender Jessica Hattersley (El Capitan). Gutzmer was second in the PCC in scoring with 33 points, (14 goals, 5 assists). Neill was fourth in the conference with 28 points (11 goals, 6 assists). Aguillon was 10th in the PCC totaling 24 points (5 goals, 14 assists). Aguillon's 14 assists were tied for the conference lead.
Although Grossmont's goalkeepers were first-and-second in the PCC in scoring average, neither were named to the all-conference squad. Brittany Ester had an overall goals against average (GAA) of .887. Tali Togisala's GAA was a measly .362 overall, and allowed zero goals in 420 minutes of conference play. Ester allowed only one conference goal.

 


Griffins are PCC Champions!

With an 8-0 win at Imperial Valley on Tuesday (11/15) the Griffins secured their first PCC Championship since 1999. The 2005 team broke school records for wins in conference (13), wins overall (19), goals allowed in conference (2) and goals against average in conference (.143).  Grossmont is currently ranked second in the state in goals allowed overall (8) and goals against average (.381).  The league title was keyed by a 2-0 home victory over then-first-place Mesa on 10/29. The Griffins await the results of the seeding meeting on Thursday 11/17 to determine their first round playoff opponent.  The first game will be Friday 11/18 or Saturday 11/19.  Stay posted.


Grossmont Reclaims PCC Lead

The Grossmont Girls soccer team took a major step to claiming their first PCC championship in over 5 years.  On Friday Nov. 4th the girls defeated then first place Mesa college to take over the top spot in the conference.  An early goal by Alexis Zukowski followed by a penalty kick goal by Stephanie Garcia sealed the 2-0 victory in front of a large home crowd at Grossmont.  The Griffins will finish up with their final regular season home game against Southwestern on Wednesday Nov. 9, and then travel to Imperial Valley College for the season finale, Thursday the 15th. A win in those two games will give the Griffins their 4th PCC Championship, and first since 1999.

 


Garcia Named PCC Athlete Of The WeekGarcia

Stephanie Garcia, a freshman sweeper from Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., and the key to a defense that has surrendered only one goal in conference play, scored on a penalty kick as the Griffins downed Mesa 2-0.
The victory moves the Griffs ahead of the Olympians, who led the PCC entering the game, back into first place in the conference.
“(Garcia’s) read of the game and tenacity when needed has been spot on all year,” Grossmont coach Howard Hawver said.
 


Griffins Dominate Statistical Leaders

Grossmont women's soccer is well represented on this week's PCC Leader-board, headed by points leader Alexis Zukowski. In addition the Griffins are also fourth in the state in goals scored as a team. For the PCC Stats, Click Here.


Grossmont reaches the Championship Final of the "Duel in the Desert"

VICTORVILLE - Grossmont Soccer advanced to the final of the inaugural "Duel in the Desert" tournament at Victor Valley College. The Griffins defeated East LA College 2-0, and host Victor Valley 5-0, to advance to the championship final against LA Pierce. Grossmont played well, but lost to Pierce in a close final. To date the losses to top ranked LA Pierce are the only ones for the Griffins.

Lisa Mix selected Athlete of the Week

Freshman forward Lisa Mix (Steele Canyon) was the first PCC Athlete of the week chosen for the week of 9/4/05. Mix scored a goal and added an assist in the Griffins 2-0 win against visiting Cochise Valley college from Arizona.
