Cross Country Update 11/10
The Pacific Coast Conference Championship were held at
Morley Field, Balboa Park Friday Oct. 27 and hosted by
Grossmont College. The Morley Field course is in the same
location as the Footlocker High School National Championship
and the women’s 5k is very similar to that course. It is one
of the toughest courses in California with many hills,
slanted gradients, thick grass and wood chips to make it
extremely challenging. Therefore all of the athletes’ times
were quite slow (compared to most other conference
championship courses).
10/27 – PCC Championships 5k– Grossmont Women’s team -
3rd place
14. Terry Izaguirre 23:48 (Top 15=All P.C.C. Honors)
16. Celina Ochoa 24:34 (Just missed All P.C.C. by 1 place,
most improved on team from last year – great competitor!)
20. Jo Moya 25:00 (great race, she is a natural – with
commitment could be a very good xc runner)
21. Ana Palacio 25:29 (consistently improving, becoming one
of the strongest runners on the team!)
24. Kasey Tolbert 26:16 (gradually getting over injuries and
back up to speed, she will be at the front when completely
healthy)
27. Sasha Pino 26:33 (training harder than ever, determined,
dedicated, she is due for a fast race)
30. Anissa Pino 27:33 (new to running, starting to get the
benefits of all the hard work)
31. Crystal Roldan 27:40 (fun to coach, a very fast runner -
could be a sprinter)
Grossmont’s women fought hard at PCC, finishing third and
qualifying as a team for the So. Cal. Regional Championships
again (2 years in a row!). As a team, the women moved up
another spot in Conference this year, improving for the
third year in a row! (2004-5th, 2005-4th, 2006-3rd). “We
lost 4 of our top runners from last season, but the
returners worked hard all year to obtain higher levels of
fitness and it has paid off in a big way.” Our team
captains, Celina Ochoa and Terry Izaguirre led the team to
third place at the PCC Championships. Terry has been injured
all season but she is finally feeling healthy now and is
picking up where she left off last season (2005 State
Qualifier, 20:31). Celina has improved immensely, she was
the most dedicated athlete on the team through the summer
and it shows, dropping over 2 minutes (2005 PR-24:50, 2006
PR-22:47).
I would like to thank each of the volunteers who helped with
the Conference Championships, you did an excellent job! I
especially appreciate the outstanding work and effort from
Coach Paul Greer, Coach Thom Hunt, Coach Richard Cota,
Grossmont College Athletic Director Jim Spillers, Grossmont
Athletic Trainer Chris Ray, Coach Andrew Myette, Coach Hugh
Gerhardt, Coach Jennifer Williams, Laura Burger, Cheryl
Campbell, Beth Kelley, Jessica Turner, Tahlilah Chief, Diane
Nelson, Dave Nelson, Jeff Lustgarten, Dee Murdock, Bertha
Roldan, Pat Moya, Steve Corman, Kathy Macias, Linda Snider,
Sage Campbell, Jada Schnieder, Ruth Castillo-Eggett, the
Grossmont College Baseball team, the Cuyamaca Track and
Field team and several Grossmont College faculty, students,
parents and friends. I could not have done it without you. I
appreciate your help very much. Thank you!
The Southern California Regional Championships for cross
country were in Lancaster, CA. Friday November 3. In
contrast to the PCC race at Morley Field, the So. Cal.
Regional course was on a couple of soccer fields. It was
almost completely flat, not a true “cross country” course.
11/3 – So Cal Regional Championships 5k – 23rd Overall/
3rd PCC
82. Terry Izaguirre 22:45 (qualified for State as an
individual)
117. Celina Ochoa 23:55 (solid race, great effort – very
tough kick at the finish!)
127. Ana Palacio 24:18 (best performance on the team)
144. Kasey Tolbert 25:25 (another big drop in time,
returning to early season speed)
153. Sasha Pino 26:00 (gave it everything, great commitment)
172. Anissa Pino 28:22 (didn’t have her best race, still
great support to teammates)
Grossmont’s team was in great shape and they had a shot at
qualifying for State. They have done a lot of hard training,
5-6 days a week at 6 or 7am all year long running up Cowles
Mtn., around Lake Murray, all over the hills in Mission
Trails park and speed work on our awesome new track…they
wanted to go to State! They gave the greatest effort that
they could. But on this day they did not have their best
race as a team. Terry will compete at State on Nov. 18.
Everyone on the team improved a lot this year.
