Cooper named PCAC's 2011-12 MVP, Harris is first-teamer(2/15/2012) Grossmont's Stevi Cooper was named the Most Valuable Player in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference this weekend, an award decided by the conference's coaches.Cooper played in all 28 games as the Griffins finished the season with a 15-14 overall record. The sophomore averaged 11 points and 6 rebounds per game on the season. She was also the team leader in free-throw percentage at 72%. Cooper showed a knack for the heroic with a couple of big shots to win or tie games for the Griffins. On Januaury 28th. Trailing Southwestern by three with just seconds to play, the Griffin inbound pass was nearly stolen and Cooper had to win a footrace into the backcourt to retrieve the ball. She ended up with the ball in her hands with 5 seconds to go and 30 feet to get to the three-point line. With two defenders racing at her Cooper pulled up and canned a game-tying three-pointer with :00.7 seconds remaining, to send the game to overtime, which the Griffins eventually won. On February 1st Cooper came through in the clutch again hitting a running jumper in the lane with 19 seconds remaining to secure a 71-68 win over visiting Imperial Valley College. Cooper was selected as Conference Athlete of the Week the week of January 22nd. Forward Nicole Harris was named to the All-PCAC First Team. Harris was the Griffins leading scorer (12.5 ppg) and rebounder (7.8). Harris was especially effective on the offensive glass with a team-best 94 offensive rebound. To put the number in perspective, no Griffin other than Cooper and Harris had more than 70 defensive rebounds. She was named to the All-Tournament team of the Grossmont 24th Annual Holiday Tournament and was also selected as a PCAC Athlete of the Week on January 1st. With so much talent leaving the program Head Coach Karen Caires is looking to add to the roster of returners with new recruits. Players interested in joining the program should contact Coach Caires directly. karen.caires@gcccd.edu

Cooper delivers another last-second victory
Box Score (2/1/2012) Stevi Cooper came through in the clutch again hitting a running jumper in the lane with 19 seconds remaining to secure a 71-68 win over visiting Imperial Valley College. The Griffins did not take a lead in the second half until an Andrea Bird layup made it 52-50 with 9:51 to play. The game then went back-and-forth with IVC clinging to a slim lead until an Eygiel Limbo free throw tied the game at 66-all with 1:47 to play. After IVC took a 2-point lead, Shateara Anderson hit a free throw to cut it to a 67-68 deficit with 1:03 to go. IVC then had a chance to put the game away but Cooper blocked a sure layup from behind with :32 to play. The Griffins then called timeout and Cooper took the ensuing inbound pass strong to the paint for the go-ahead bucket. The telling statistic in the game was Grossmont's domination of the boards, 53-34. The unlikely hero was 5-foot point guard Eygiel Limbo who corralled 8 boards, 6 of them on the offensive glass. Cooper finished with a team-best 22 points and 8 rebounds. Forward Nicole Harris had 17 points and 9 boards. Anderson knocked down 18 points with 7 rebounds in a strong performance off the bench.

Griffins win overtime thriller due to Cooper heroics
Box Score (1/18/2012) After an ugly start, Grossmont's conference matchup with visiting Southwestern turned into a thrilling 58-53 overtime victory. The first half saw poor shooting by both squads, and more than halfway into the first half the score was just 7-7. Southwestern took the lead 25-23 on a Carla Flores layup with 17:30 to go in the second half. The Jaguars would hold the lead or tie for most of the second half. A Nicole Harris layup with 3:53 to play knotted the score at 45-all. The sophomore forward had a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. After the Jags knocked down a 3-pointer to take the lead, freshman guard Sam Silva came off the bench to hit a big game-tying trey of her own to even the score at 48-all with 2:18 to go. With 1:58 to play the Jags hit a pair of free-throws to take a 50-48 edge. They then added another free-throw after an offensive rebound to take a 51-48 lead with :45 seconds remaining. Grossmont then inbounded the ball and called timeout. The Griffins then collected three offensive rebounds off their own misses to extend their last-ditch efforts. The last rebound was hauled in by Stevi Cooper, and Grossmont called timeout with :10 seconds to play. The inbound pass was nearly stolen and Cooper had to win a footrace into the backcourt to retrieve the ball. She ended up with the ball in her hands with 5 seconds to go and 30 feet to get to the three-point line. With two defenders racing at her Cooper pulled up and canned a game-tying three-pointer with :00.7 seconds remaining, to send the game to overtime. Grossmont outscored Southwestern 7-2 in the extra period to secure the win. Guard Shantee Woods, a recent addition to the starting lineup, had a team-best 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Cooper finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds. The win evened Grossmont's record at 11-11.

Griffins fall to #11 Saddleback in 'home' game
Box Score (1/16/2012) The Griffins played a home contest on campus at Horizon Christian High in San Diego Monday night as part of a day of basketball to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day. The court at Horizon was not equipped with a collegiate women's three-point line, so a temporary line was created with a court tape product. That temporary line proved to be Griffins undoing as the state's #11 rated team (#5 in Southern California) connected on 9-of-18 treys for a 56-43 win. The Griffins by contrast connected on only one of their eight three-pointers, that coming from freshman Sam Silva. Grossmont shot 32% overall in the contest, and to add to the frustration connected on only 10-of-19 free-throws. Saddleback created separation with a 10-3 run to start the second half, and the Griffins were never able to cut the lead to single digits. The bright spot for Grossmont was a scoring outburst from Sophomore point guard Eygiel Limbo, with 12. Grossmont 55, Palomar 33 (1/13/2012) The Griffins picked up a blowout Pacific Coast Athletic Conference win Friday night at Palomar College. Nicole Harris lead the Griffin attack with 19 points. Guards Shateara Anderson (9) and Stevi Cooper (8) and Shantee Woods (7) rounded out the scoring leaders for Grossmont, who evened their season record at 10-10.

Griffins lose wild one to Mesa
Box Score (1/11/2012) Grossmont lost a late lead and ultimately the conference game on a pair of free throws with 0.5 seconds remaining to visiting San Diego Mesa College Wednesday night at home. A Shantee Woods jumper gave Grossmont a 49-43 lead with 2:10 to play in the second half. The Griffins then turned the ball over on their next possession and Mesa's Angela Eley canned a pair of free throws to cut the Grossmont lead to 49-45 with 1:17 to play. The Griffins then came down the floor and committed another turnover that resulted in a Mesa layup, cutting the advantage to 49-47. On the ensuing inbound play Mesa's Jessica Bautista stole the ball and Grossmont's Nicole Harris was whistled for an intentional foul. Bautista made it count hitting both foul shots to tie the game at 49-all with :37 seconds to play. The intentional foul gave Mesa the ball following the foul shots. Mesa ran the clock down to :10 and then missed a jump shot giving the Griffins a shot. Grossmont inbounded the ball and guard Eygiel Limbo raced down the floor and Grossmont's Karen Caires called a timeout with :04 seconds to play. The Griffins drew up a play to score under the basket, but after they had trouble inbounding the ball it went to Andrea Bird at the elbow who drew a foul on a shot with :00.5 on the clock. Bird made one of the two foul shots for a 50-49 advantage, and what seemed like a sure Grossmont victory. However as the foul shot went in, the riled up crowd spilled onto the floor in celebration and the officials charged Grossmont with a controversial technical foul. That put Mesa's Denise White on the free-throw stripe where she calmly sank both shots for a 51-50 lead with :00.5 on the clock. Grossmont tried to foul on the Mesa inbound, but the officials called the game over. Woods finished with a team-high 10 points for the Griffins. Tenisha Lee and Shateara Anderson chipped in 7 points each in the Griffin effort.

Women open home season Box Score (11/15/11) The Griffins returned home Tuesday to open the home season in defense of their 2010-2011 Conference Championship, hosting Citrus College. Grossmont secured back-to-back conference titles with their 20-8 season a year ago, and look to maintain the momentum Head Coach Karen Caires has established at Grossmont. Though they trailed 20-25 at the half, the Griffins ultimately fell to the Owls 50-37. A sluggish start to the second half dug a hole the Griffins couldn't climb out of. Grossmont went more than five minutes to open the second half before they scored their first points on a Nicole Harris layup. The Owls controlled the glass (49-26) and were the beneficiaries of too many second chance points against the Griffins. For Grossmont, returner Stevi Cooper was the only player in double digit scoring with 11 points to go with 8 rebounds and a pair of steals. Both squads struggled from the charity stripe, with each team hitting just 52% of their free chances.
