Resolution of Concern Regarding Grossmont College’s Lack of Stable Leadership

And the Presidential Search Process

Whereas, there is no board policy or district procedure for hiring a college president;

Whereas, the ACCJC accreditation team recommended stability in college leadership in the 1995 and 2001 reports;

Whereas, the Grossmont College Academic Senate is concerned that the lack of leadership due to administrative terminations, resignations and multiple interim positions (Interim President; Interim Vice President, Student Services; Interim Vice President, Academic Affairs; Interim Assistant Dean, Student Affairs; Interim Dean, EOPS; Interim Foundation President) will negatively affect the outcome of the upcoming accreditation visit and has already negatively impacted Grossmont College’s academic and student services programs;

Whereas, the Academic Senate has a standing no confidence vote in the chancellor where concerns of shared governance has been identified and the search for a new president is an example of a shared governance process;

Whereas, the chancellor delayed responding and then gave no comprehensive explanation to the presidential search committee as to why he rejected the committee’s recommendations;

Resolved that the Academic Senate asks the board to direct the chancellor to develop policies and procedures regarding selection and evaluation of the college president which will be reviewed by the district shared governance councils allowing the college to address shortfalls in meeting the current accreditation standards for leadership and governance,

Resolved, that the Academic Senate requests that the chancellor meet with the search committee to provide details of his findings, specific reasons for declining the forwarded candidates and that he provide specific and detailed direction to the committee with regard to what he is seeking in this, the third search for a President of Grossmont College,

Resolved, that the Academic Senate expresses it’s deep and ongoing concern that the absence of a stable leadership team jeopardizes the college’s upcoming re-accreditation.
