Physics, Astronomy and Physical Science

Description

The primary use of technology in the department is in the physics, astronomy and physical science laboratories. In addition to experimental apparatus, we use computers for data taking in lab and for presentation and demonstration in lecture. The equipment ranges in age from new to very old. Some of the older equipment no longer functions adequately or, while functional, does not provide students with experience with equipment used in actual work environments. The notebook computers used in lab are outside of warranty and are approaching the end of their useful lives. In accordance with the Educational Master Plan and Program Review for the Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Physical Science, the department strives to provide a high-quality academic experience. The Educational Master Plan indicates we should "continue to acquire up to date laboratory supplies (new and replacement) that reflect current standards for technology." Hence, we have a continual need to acquire new equipment to meet three objectives:

Replace obsolescent but functioning equipment with equipment of types that students may use in real-world work experience.

Replace equipment that no longer functions at required standards.

Acquire new equipment to support new objectives.

Acquire computer equipment and software to support classroom activities.

Curriculum Impact

Technology affects our curriculum in three ways:

Equipment must function well enough to demonstrate scientific principles.

Equipment, particularly electronic test equipment, should prepare students for the actual work environment.

Computer equipment and software used in the classroom must be suitable for current pedagogical practice.

Approximate Number of Students Served

The most recent program review document shows spring and fall semester enrollment totaling 1500 students. This number has been growing slowly.

Support Impact

A technician to support night classes has been a long standing need.

 

Year 1 (2007-2008)

Objective

We plan to purchase new and replacement equipment and software to provide a top quality educational experience for our students.

Action to Meet Objective

As funds become available, we will purchase the following equipment. Priorities may be changed depending on changing needs and available funds.

Equipment Purpose
Digital power supplies Replace 24 analog power supplies that no longer function at the required level.
Digital oscilloscopes Replace 24 analog oscilloscopes no longer in common use in the workplace.
Eyepieces for 14-inch telescope Equip newly purchased 14-inch telescope
Helmholtz apparatus Replace non-functioning laboratory equipment
Millikin experiment projector Acquire new demonstration device
Air table and digital camera Acquire new demonstration apparatus
Flat screen computer monitors Provide faculty members with necessary tools for class preparation. Flat screens allow more efficient use of cramped work areas.
CD Writers/DVD Provide faculty members with necessary tools for class preparation
Astronomy simulation software Provide faculty members with the ability to simulate celestial phenomena in the classroom.

Year 2 (2008-2009)
