Grossmont College Technology Plan 2007-2010.

Music

Description

The Music Department is in the process of upgrading it's technology. The last of our old digital pianos have been replaced. Many of the new ones need repair because of the heavy use by music students. Several of our grand pianos have becoming unserviceable due to old age. Many instruments in our collection are rapidly aging and becoming more and more difficult to keep in proper operational condition. These will need to be replaced when funding becomes available. The iBooks in room 224 are six years old and in need of replacing. They still work satisfactorily, but the batteries are failing and replacements are not available. We will need to replace those machines and update our software. We will also need computers and software for our second piano lab, room 230 (upstairs). Currently we use Digital Performer for sequencing, Practica Musica for ear-training and Finale for music notation.

Curriculum Impact

We are creating a Jazz Studies Emphasis degree and we will need additional classroom space to offer the additional music courses for the new program. The Jazz Elements courses will need to be taught in a piano (or music technology) lab. We will need additional CPU's and software licenses to serve the increase in enrollment.

Approximate Number of Students Served

The Music Department serves about 50-60 music majors and about 1500 general music students. We have 30 music faculty this year.

Support Impact

We anticipate that we would need no additional support to keep our labs operational. As we obtain more CPU's for our second lab, that may change.
