Grossmont College Technology Plan 2007-2010.

Communication

Description

The Department has three dedicated classrooms and office space for all full-time and part-time faculty. Our classrooms are equipped with data projectors, document imagers, instructional computers, a videotaping system to record students’ presentations, and VCR/DVD combination units. We also have a squad room for the Speech and Debate team that has computer work stations for use by students, who do research to prepare presentations for competition. The Speech and Debate squad room is located in a building scheduled for eventual demolition and one of our faculty offices is located in a temporary trailer.

The next three years will be a period of relative stasis, but beginning in the second half of 2010 it is expected that our area of campus will be remodeled. This remodel will completely remodel and reconfigure our three existing classrooms, add one additional dedicated classroom to our area, relocate all faculty offices, and create a new squad room for Speech and Debate. Because of the timing of the remodel, we believe that our best course is to maintain technology more or less as is during the three-year period currently being planned for, gearing up at the end of the three-year period for a major update in technology that will coincide with the planned remodel.

Curriculum Impact

Multi-media presentations have become an expected standard in many professional environments. Instructors need to be able to model effective use of multi-media in our courses, and students need training and practice in the use of multi-media. In addition, video recording of presentations is a proven method for improving individuals’ presentation skills.

Approximate Number of Students Served

The Department serves over 2000 students each semester.

Support Impact

We hope to bring on one additional full-time instructor at some point during the three-year period.
