Foreign Language Department

Updated technology plan as of November 26, 2002

2002-2004

Description

Presently, Fall 2002 the Foreign Language Department has ten (10) computers and nine (9) printers.  One is used by the Foreign Language Assistant and is located in the Foreign Language Office. The Foreign Language Office has an HP  printer/scanner/copier/fax.  The Foreign Language Office also has one computer with the capability to burn CDs and is used exclusively for that.  The department chair now has a high-end computer with access to IFAS.  All eight full-time faculty have upgraded computers and printers.  Seven of the  faculty computers now have ZIP drives, and CD Roms; six have speakers and four have printer/scanners/copiers.  All departmental computers need to have Microsoft Office upgraded to at least 2000 and Windows needs to be upgraded and replaced with Windows XP. Software packages are required for web page design, foreign language characters and translation software, in all languages taught. The Foreign Language Department is pushing towards replacing computer-assisted learning software for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish with web sites links. It is imperative that all fulltime faculty members obtain computers and software that will facilitate the quick access to web pages and the proper tools in order to create web pages with appropriate and proper links. A CD burner is now available to provide instructional support.

In the classroom, there are Smart Carts in four of the five foreign language classrooms.  Currently, smart-cart use in room 538 is limited to equipment check out from IMS. The addition of at least one more Smart Cart is necessary.  At present, none of the classrooms used by the Foreign Language Department are equipped with data projectors and screens.  With the continued incorporation of technology in language learning, data projectors and screens in at least two  classrooms, 555A and 555B, would enhance instruction.

Curriculum Impact

Updated computer technology provides faculty with tools to generate instructional material and high-tech multimedia presentations; furthermore, it provides faculty with the vehicles to develop collaborative learning packages and increases the overall work efficiency of the Foreign Language Department programs. Faculty and students will have access to new and/or updated versions of software from on or off campus.

Approximate Number of Students Served

Presently the Foreign Language Department serves approximately 2200 students.  With the approval of majors in Arabic, Japanese and Russian and the offering of Chinese in fall 2002, the Department anticipates a slight increase in enrollment.
