Microsoft Word Helpful Hints

Highlighting by Using the F8 and Arrow Keys

1.      Place the cursor before or after the text you wish to highlight and click the left mouse button.

2.      Press the F8 key, which will serve as an "anchor" showing where text you wish to highlight begins or ends.

3.      Press the appropriate arrow key (left arrow to move to the left, or right arrow to move to the right) until the text is highlighted. You can use the up or down arrow key to highlight one line at a time. Press Esc to remove the anchor.

Highlighting by Using the Mouse

1.      Place the cursor before or after the text you wish to highlight.

2.      Hold down the left mouse button.

3.      Move the mouse left, right, up, or down until the text is highlighted.

 

  • Spelling and Grammar Check
    • Press F7 or click on the Spelling icon on the Standard toolbar when you are done typing.
    • Or to check just one word right click on the word if it has a red line underneath it and select the correct spelling or choose ignore all to leave it the same.
    • If a word or phrase has a green line underneath it, that means the grammar is bad. Right click on the word or phrase to choose the correct grammar, or choose ignore all to leave it the same.


 

Saving your Word document

  • Click on File.
  • Highlight Save As. Press Enter.
  • Specify the correct folder in the Save In field.
  • Name your file.
  • Click on Save.
  • Click on File.
  • Highlight Exit. Press Enter.

Important: Always save your work periodically, so if something happens like the computer crashes you won’t lose your work

 


Hints, Tips, Tricks, etc.

 

  • If you want bullets press SHIFT+8, then SPACEBAR and enter text and press ENTER
  • Or you can go to FORMAT and choose BULLETS AND NUMBERING choose which bullets you want and click OK or hit ENTER.
  • Double or Single Spacing

    • Go to FORMAT
    • Click on PARAGRAPH
    • Under Spacing is a drop down box which says line spacing
    • Choose the one you want
    • Click OK
