Griffins remember teammate Kimberly Bateman
On
July 11, 2009 Grossmont College volleyball player Kimberly Rose
Bateman was killed in a vehicle accident. Kimberly was 21 years old.
Griffins head coach Jamie Ivers recalled her memories of Bateman as
the team prepares for the 2009 season without one of their own.
"Barely 48 hours before we would have our first practice, Kimmy was
killed in a single car crash on I-8 involving just herself and her
dog Dakoda and cat.
Kimberly Bateman known as Kimmy to everyone who new her played at
Mission Bay High School before playing at Grossmont College.
She had a career high 18 kills and 12 digs in our win of the final
match of the 2008 season against Imperial Valley College.
Kimmy was everything you would want out of a player. She always
wanted to be better and would always ask for things she could be
doing better. She had so much passion for the game of volleyball and
would do anything to make our team better. This spring she made huge
strides as a player and was finally getting the mental side of
volleyball. 2009 was going to be her year to really shine.
Kimmy has bonded this team with her death more than I ever thought
we could be bonded. This 2009 season is solely dedicated to her."
