Palomar College may not be the team with the highest passing
rating, but they are in the top dozen. QB David
Fisher ranks in the top ten in eight separate categories.
Fisher, a University of Nevada bounce-back, is averaging
237 yards passing per game.
On the receiving end of those passes will be WR Alex Wheat (88.7
ypg) and WR Nigel Westbrooks (65.9) both are among the leaders
of the SCFA receiving categories. Wheat and Westbrooks combined
have 20 of Fishers 24 passing
touchdowns.
The Comets special teams, like Grossmont, is led by P Rocco
Hemphill who is 16th out of 37 punters. Hemphill is
averaging 36.1 yards per punt. K Cameron Mercado is a perfect
40-40 on his PAT attempts and is 11-17 on field
goals. RB Austin Dennis is in the top-10 in punt returns with an
average of 11.4 yards per return.
Defensively, LB Adam Witzmann (11.1), DE Carson Paopao (8.3),
and LB Jeremiah Kose (8.2) all are ranked in the
top-20 in tackles.

Griffins travel to Pasadena
Pasadena Game Notes
Last week the Grossmont College Griffins broke into the win
column for the first time in three weeks and look to continue
the streak when they travel to Pasadena on Saturday to face the
Lancers.
When you look up Lancers, you are informed of military units in
the Middle Ages that used the weapon on horseback. That couldn’t
be further from what the Pasadena City College Lancers are this
year. These Lancers go to the air, and keep going to the air.
WR Wayne Peters leads the SCFA with 8.4 catches per contest this
season. Peters is also in the top-five in all-purpose yards
averaging 150.4 YPG.
Throwing the ball to Peters and the rest of the receiving corps.
of the Lancers is QB Cesar Hernandez. Hernandez is the 15th
(passing average per game) in the SCFA throwing for 206 YPG.
This is the sixth time this season that the Griffins will be
facing a top-30 QB. Hernandez has an average of 202.1
all-purpose yards per game.
Special teams is also a potent part of the attack. K Robert
Poage is ranked in a tie for 28th in kick scoring with 3.6
ppg. Poage is hitting on 90.9% (20-22) of his PAT attempts.
Defensively, DB Jarron Williams leads with 6.6 tackles per game.
On the line, DL Pone Faleofa leads the rush with
eight sacks. LB Kevin Cramer has a team-leading three fumble
recoveries.

Game Notes
This week Fullerton College comes to Mashin-Roth Memorial
Stadium to face the Griffins in a National Division, Southern
Conference game pitting the two teams that have yet to win a
conference game.
Fullerton is struggling on the offensive side of the ball, but
more than make up with it on defense. The Hornets rank second in
the 37-team SCFA circuit in total defense, allowing 250.4 yards
per contest (178.1 passing / 72.3 rushing).
RB Kelvin York is the offensive spark for Fullerton, averaging
84.6 yards per game on the ground placing him tenth in SCFA.
Special teams wise however, Kenyon Lee (31.3 ypr (3rd kick
return)), Tubotein Taylor (28.1 ypr (12th kick return) and
Willie Clark (9.2 ypr (13th punt return) give the Hornets good
field position. P Sean Huddleson also helps with the field
position battle averaging 35.6 yards per punt.
But the defense is where the Hornets get all of their notoriety.
DL Justin Bernthaler is tied for fifth in sacks with seven.
Bernthaler also has 11.5 TFL’s which is good for a tie for
sixth.
Last week at Mt San Antonio, the Griffins couldn’t score in the
first 58 minutes of the game, before they finally broke through
with a touchdown pass from Harrison Stewart. The last time the
Griffins were shutout was the second round of the 2004 playoffs.
Mt SAC
Game Notes
Coming off their conference opening loss to Saddleback, the
Griffins look for a win against the top-ranked (strength of
schedule) Mounties of Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut on
Saturday night.
Mt. San Antonio is a challenge for any opponent, having won
the last four Southern California titles. Coming off a tightly
fought win against Palomar, Mt. SAC looks to continue their
12-game conference winning streak.
The Mounties are led by QB Cameron Deen (119-207-1414-11-6) who
is tied for seventh in the SCFA for passing yards per game with
235.7. Leading the ground attack is RB Matthew Botello
(92-446-4) which is good for 14th in the SCFA.
Deen’s favorite targets are WR Alonzo Agwuenu (33-510-9) and WR
Darrin Duncan (29- 391-0) both are in the top-25 in receptions
per game.
Special teams is not a weak link for Mt. SAC either PK Travis
Coons ranks in the upper echelon of kickers in terms of scoring
with 24 points (18-19 PAT’s), including a field goal of 44
yards. Fellow PK Abraham Torres is a perfect seven for seven in
field goals with his longest being 46 yards. Between Torres and
Coons the tandem had made five in a row prior to missing a 37
yard attempt last week against Palomar. Ranking third in punting
is Daniel Colby who is kicking the ball 40.4 yards per punt
(just under a yard less than Grossmont’s Steffan Mos).

(10/15) The Griffins had their chances to pull off the upset at
home Saturday, but simply didn't have enough big plays in them
to get by Saddleback College who won 37-23.
Grossmont cut the Gaucho lead to 21-17 in the third quarter in
an ugly contest that saw 8 fumbles, 5 interceptions, 14 punts
and Saddleback QB Ben Gomez catch a pass that he threw.
Offensively, the Griffins enjoyed a breakout performance from RB
Dontae Williams who rushed 16 times for a game high 105 yards
and two touchdowns. The 6-foot 215 tailback out of Aldine Texas
used a punishing style to plow through the Gaucho defense.
Grossmont quarterback Mike Karls was busy completing 23-of-48
passes for 211 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.
On defense Grossmont defensive back David Edgerson recorded 9
tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.
LB Lakeem Lewis and DB Dorion Howard each recorded a forced
fumble for the now 2-4 Griffins who have the tall task of
traveling to Mt San Antonio College next week.

Southern Conference play begins
with Saddleback
Game
Notes
The Griffins will begin National Division, Southern Conference
play this week against Saddleback College on a two game win
streak. Grossmont finished fifth in the six team conference a
year ago.
The Saddleback Gauchos come to Mashin-Roth Memorial Stadium for
a 1:00 kickoff with the SCFA’s leading passer, Ben Gomez.
Gomez (So., 6-0, 200, San Clemente HS) leads with 344.2 ypg
through six weeks of action. Gomez also leads Southern
California in total offense. The Gauchos also feature RB Donnell
Dickerson (So., 6-2, 220, Cisco CC (TX)) is in the top-10 for
rushing along with WR Rodney Woodland (So., 5-9,
180, Valley Forge Military Academy) who is in the top-10 for
receiving.
Dickerson, is in the top-10 while only playing in three games.
Woodland on the other hand, is on pace to catch just under 1,000
yards (978).
They were 0-3 against the weakest part of their schedule.
Grossmont has since posted back-to-back victories, including a
38-14 romp over visiting College of the Canyons of Valencia in
Saturday's (Oct. 1) non-conference ballgame at Mashin-Roth
Memorial Field.
With a bye next week and the start of Southern Conference action
two weeks away, Jordan – albeit his team rates as an underdog –
believes his club could make a run for a championship.
Griffins host #10 College of the Canyons Saturday
Week 5
Game Notes
Grossmont College will look to continue on in their winning ways
when they take on the College of the Canyons, this weekend, as
the Griffins close out the non-conference portion of the
schedule.
College of the Canyons is deep and balanced in the three major
offensive categories. Highlighting the variety
on offense is the fact that the Cougars have used three
quarterbacks with all three passing for over 100
yards. Seven of the teams15 players listed under rushing have
gained more than 20 yards. Defensively,
the team is led by SO Curtis McCann who has three interceptions
and FR DE Justyn Eddins has 3.5 sacks
which is good for tenth in the state.

Southwestern Game Photos
(9-17-11) Grossmont College - A furious comeback attempt in the
waning minutes was not enough for the host Griffins as they fell
Saturday 37-40 to Southwestern College.
Grossmont had an encouraging start as quarterback Chris Bonner
hooked up with Mervin Stewart on a 63-yard touchdown pass on the
game's second play from scrimmage.
After a Southwestern score, the Griffins added an Andres
Carrillo 29-yard field goal and a Patrick Arinze 1-yard
touchdown run to take a 17-7 lead.
The Griffins would not score again until just over three minutes
remained in the game.
The Jaguars proceeded to dominate the majority of the game.
Southwestern rattled off 26 unanswered points and kept the
Griffin offense off of the field.
Southwestern racked up 471 yards of total offense to Grossmont's
377.
The time of possession was also telling with the Jags dominating
42:57 to 17:03.
The Griffin comeback fell just short, though quarterback Mike
Karls made an impressive showing after starter Bonner left with
an injury.
With the Griffins trailing 33-17 with 3:10 remaining Grossmont
wide receiver Josh Bell made an acrobatic catch on a jump ball
in the end zone, and after Karls ran in the two-point conversion
the Jaguar lead was down to 33-25.
With 2:41 remaining defensive back Josh Canup intercepted a
Brett Nelson pass and returned it 26 yards to the Southwestern
9-yard line.
On the next play Karls connected with Tim Patrick for a 9-yard
score, but Karls' 2-point conversion pass attempt sailed out of
the end zone.
The Jaguars then sealed the victory when Nelson scrambled into
the end zone for a score to take a 40-31 lead.
Grossmont's final score came when Karls hit Patrick again for
another 9-yard score as time expired.
Grossmont linebacker racked up a game-high 9 tackles, including
two for a loss. Defensive back Eldredge Calhoun had an
interception, and nearly took it back for a score when he was
knocked out of bounds at the Southwestern 1-yard line.
Bonner completed 11-of-23 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown.
Karls was 9-of-13 for 148 yards and 3 scores.
The Griffins travel to Orange Coast next week for a 6pm affair.
Coming off two straight losses, the Griffins will try and break
into the win column for the first time in 2011 against the
Jaguars of Southwestern College. Since 2001 the Griffins are 9-1
against the Jaguars with a composite score of 416-167, with the
lone loss coming back in 2008. The average score since 2001 has
been 42-17.
The game kicks off at 1:00 pm on campus at
Grossmont College.

(9-11-11) TORRANCE, Calif. – The Griffins have found themselves
off to a surprisingly sluggish start after opening the season
0-2. The Griffins struck first, scoring in the opening period,
them watched as El Camino rattled off 34 unanswered points for a
34-7 defeat.
The Warriors harassed Grossmont quarterbacks Mike Karls and
Chris Bonner all night, sacking them nine times. The Griffin
offense mustered just 182 total yards on the evening as El
Camino racked up 445 total yards.
One bright spot in the Grossmont attack was wideout Martell
Esteen, who caught five passes, including a 49-yard score, for
107 yards.
Sophomore running back Peter Walton led the way with 12
carries for 121 yards and two touchdowns, including a marvelous
67 yard scoring run to start the fourth quarter that gave the
Warriors a 27-7 lead and put the game out of reach.
A second quarter Donald Jarrin 32-yard field goal cut the
Warriors defecit to 7-3. Then, with the first half coming to a
close, the Warriors put together an impressive nine-play,
58-yard drive that was capped off with quarterback Omar Herrera
finding sophomore wide receiver Jarrad Shaw in the back of the
endzone with two seconds remaining to put the Warriors ahead for
good.
After a rocky 3-for-13 start for Herrera, he was able to
recover and complete 13 of his next 18 passes and finished the
night with 152 passing yards and one touchdown. Shaw finished
the game with three catches for 24 yards and one touchdown.
The Griffins will host Southwestern College on Saturday
September 17th at 1:00 in their home-opener with both squads
looking for their first win of the season.
Griffins travel to take on El Camino
Week 2 Game
Notes
(9-9-11) This week the Griffins will take on the Warriors of El
Camino College on Saturday September 10 in Torrance. Coming off
a week-one loss at San Diego Mesa 33-30, the green and gold will
be on the hunt for their first win. In last season's contest El
Camino defeated Grossmont on the field, then had to forfeit the
win a few weeks later.
Griffins open with rare loss at Mesa
Five turnovers doom Grossmont in first loss to Mesa
since 1993
One thing about Karls is he makes things happen. Not always
good. Karls rushed for three touchdowns and passed for a fourth
but it wasn’t enough to overcome five turnovers as the Griffins
lost to the Olympians 33-30. The victory snapped Mesa’s 13-game
losing streak to the Griffs.
The Olympians last beat the Griffins in a downpour 28-27 in
1993. The outcome was decided on a 2-point conversion in the
final 7 seconds.
